A few weeks after returning from our Scandinavian cruise, our daughter and family came to visit. We had not seen them in person in almost three years. Having them here was absolutely fabulous! One of the things we had to get used to was our granddaughter who had changed from a child into a 15 almost 16 year old teenager. Good grief! Her shoe size is bigger than mine.
Anyway, we visited several Hawaiian fun spots during their stay. One place was the Dole Pineapple Plantation. It's not really a plantation exactly. It's just a tourist spot where you can try their (frozen) pineapple Dole Whip, walk through a little maze, ride a little train and check out tourist souvenirs.
Well... while sitting there enjoying our Dole Whip a brood of chickens kept walking by. There were all kinds of chickens or roosters with different coloring which was fun to see.
But then this one showed up. Is he weird looking or what?
I thought he rather looked like the dinosaur he's descended from. Have you ever seen a chicken like him? Or would it be a she?
I'm not a chicken authority as they don't run wild in Pennsylvania like they do in hawaii! But that does look like one funky chicken. Hey, 5 years ago my brother Steve and his wife visited Hawaii and this pineapple farm. They sent me a box with two giant pineapples from here, took me forever to eat them 😋👍
ReplyDeleteThat is the one thing that surprised me the most on my visit to Hawaii. Monkeys wouldn't have phased me but walking along in the jungle and hearing only roosters crowing all around me was an unusual feeling. We also had to guard our food carefully when eating at picnic tables at various roadside stands. If anything fell off the table, there was no five second rule. It was just gone amid of flurry of flapping feathers.

ReplyDeleteIt is a surprise to see feral chickens in Hawaii. I keep thinking the eggs should be collected to help feed people. Maybe the chickens should be collected. Kauai has been "known" for them for awhile. Some resorts try to keep them away because visitors don't like to be woken up by roosters. One "cliff-side" restaurant I went to on Kauai with a lovely outdoor patio, had chicken wire fencing on the perimeter, between the tables and bush line in order to keep the chickens out. You don't notice it until you look down from your table, after seeing them walk near the fence. There are quite a few around the blowhole site on Kauai. At my resort room spot, on the grass level, I woke early on my own and saw a groundskeeper spraying the perimeter bushes. I asked if he was spraying for feral chickens. He wished there were such a thing. But the resort did have some garden entry areas with funny little boxes intermingled with the flowers. He said those were to catch rats. Ewwww. ReplyDeleteWonderful to spend the time and to be able to appreciate the changes. Children grow up WAY too fast. I think chickens are prehistoric looking in general. I've been to the Dole and enjoyed the visit very much.

ReplyDeleteDo you know if you right click on a picture a drop down menu appears. If you click on 'search image with Google lens' it will is this picture using other Google images. It says this is a Burma rooster which appears to be a bird raised for fighting. I am glad this one is roaming free and unbothered.
