A couple of months ago the toilet in my mother's bathroom started a LOUD squeal. I wrote a post about it because I was so proud that I was able to magically stop it by pressing on the Thingamajiggy.

OK... So I'm Not a Toilet Genius
Well... a few weeks later, the toilet in our bathroom started dripping water in the tank. It would turn on at the weirdest time at night and drop water into the tank.
Well, I figured pressing on that Thingsmajiggy worked before so maybe it'll work again. And it sort of did, but as soon as I turned my back it would turn on the water again even though the tank was full.
Art studied it carefully and said maybe that stem needs to be replaced because there were bubbles coming from it. But fixing that would be a big job.
"We need to call a plumber," I said.
"Let me think about this," said Art. "Maybe it's the flapper no longer being a good enough seal. That would be a cheaper fix."
"Let's call a plumber," I said.
"Let me try replacing the flapper first," he insisted.
So we went to The Bathroom Store in Mapunapuna and he bought a flapper for $17.80. I figured it might be $17.80 down the drain, but I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt since my cure-all Thingamajiggy didn't work.
It didn't take him very long to replace it, but by golly! Would you believe the water leakage stopped?
And he was kind enough not to say, "I told you so." 🙄

I really LOVE hearing from you! However, if you sign in as ANONYMOUS, please don't forget to tell me who you are in the comment box by just writing your first name. We would all appreciate it if you kept your comment respectful and kind.
I’m using Comment Moderation for any post that is more than a day old because of aggravating SPAM. Therefore, if your comment does not go up on an older (more than a day old) post, it's because I need to OK it first. I'm sorry to have to do this, but again... sigh... it's the spam that's driving me crazy.

I'm always for self trying to fix things, before calling a professional, Not only because of the money, but mainly for the satisfaction and pleasure one gets from a good result to our efforts.
ReplyDeleteWe need a visit from that man.
ReplyDeleteArt is really a nice guy with a big heart.
ReplyDeleteBy Art doing it you did save a whole lot of money!
ReplyDeleteGood for Art! The Thingamajiggy is called the float. Those flappers do wear out over time and need to be replaced. I usually keep one in stock in our house for when the need arises. One thing I have learned over the years is that they make a version where the rubber flap seals against a surface that is kept elevated from the bottom of the tank by an inch or so. I find these work better and last longer as debris inside the tank stays sunk on the bottom of the tank and doesn't compromise the seal.
ReplyDeleteArt is so handy! And you saved plumber fees whew!
ReplyDeletePlumbers are expensive so good for Art! I can do a few minor things on toilets but John is very handy. He would be upset if I paid for a plumber if he could do the work. :) So I let him!
ReplyDeleteHa ha, that makes Art the toilet genius. Good thing is that you are married to one. Flapper is my first go to and often is the culprit.
ReplyDeleteHooray for Art!
ReplyDeleteArt is your savior.
ReplyDeleteLin says sometimes husbands are amazing and sometimes....lol!
ReplyDeleteYay Art!
ReplyDeleteThree cheers for Art!
ReplyDeleteHooray for the fix! (Flappers get floppy or slimy around here too. With our hard water destroying things over time, we even use distilled water in our irons.) Not sure you could find an item labeled thingamajiggy at the hardware store. Yep, my thingamajiggy had to be recently replaced. They're trickier than flappers. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that fixed it.
ReplyDeleteGood for Art! And even though you didn't believe, he did, and it was enough. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh hurrah! Yes, george just installed a long grab bar in the shower. and he didn't say "I told you so" either.
ReplyDeleteToilets aren't that complicated but are too much for this old guy to fix.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't even be able to find the thingamajiggy.
ReplyDeleteI could barely replace a handle
ReplyDeleteWell, you should never doubt Art. He can apparently fix anything!
ReplyDeleteI'd be out of my depth.
