I have the iPhone XR that's 4 years old. It's working fine. I take good care of my phones.
Hooowever... I thought this was a good time to upgrade because I'd read that there was a big improvement in the photo quality of the iPhone14 Pro and I'm really liking the idea of getting better photos for my blog and photobooks. Granted, since I reduce the size of my photos before posting them, you would probably not notice.
Still, I figured it was time for an upgrade when the rubber sides on my not cheap Otterbox Commuter cover started crumbling off.
That's my excuse anyway.
It was a very difficult decision because you get a personal connection with your cellphone. I know it's silly, but it's always with me. I feel like it knows me. It has my pictures on it. It's got all my family and friends on it.
It always scares me to change technology. I never know what's going to change. I never know for sure if all my information will move over to the new phone correctly.
I know. I know. It's silly.
But then my son-in-law texted me that T-Mobile had a $400 replacement deal for me if my cellphone was in good working order.
So I bit the bullet and did it.
I've read that I could do the iCloud transfer on my own, BUT I just didn't trust myself.
So we went to the T-Mobile store and had them do it for me. Everyone there was very nice and it got done in about an hour.
And then came the hard part.
I hate this part.
I had to apply the Ailun glass screen protector. Arrrghhh... It's on, but not perfect, a little off center. Dang it! 😑
I bought a different Otterbox cover this time. It's thinner, but is supposed to protect your phone from 3X as many drops as military standard (whatever that means). And the rubber is different.
I tried putting the camera lens protector on the outside of the Otterbox cover, but it just fell off.... of course.
Sigh...
And this is why I hate changing cellphones.
I also discovered that my photo sizes were suddenly much smaller than with my XR.
It took a lot of research before I corrected that feature on my iPhone settings.
I've just ordered a separate HLija camera lens cover and 🤞 that it will work.
Stilllll... I'm getting to slowly become friends with this new phone and hope all goes well.
POSTSCRIPT:
I received the new camera lens protector last week and waited a day before I got the courage to try again.
Thank goodness! It fit!!! 😁 Phew!
I think I'll wait 10 years before I upgrade again.

ReplyDeleteI think four years is pretty good for a phone. I also have an XR, but mine is only 2 years old. The photography part doesn’t bother me at thins point because I am mostly a real camera guy.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the new phone, Kay! I recently upgraded also... but didn't go for the iPhone 14. Still my new iPhone SE is a lot better than my old iPhone 6. I had the T-Mobile rep put the screen protector and the new thinner Otterbox on for me. I'm not sure the new Otterbox is as protective as the old rubber ones... but we'll see. Enjoy your new phone!
ReplyDeleteThen again, the rubber one did crumble on me so I don't know what is best. WHAT?!? T-Mobile put the screen protector on for you?!? I didn't know that was another service. I'm going to have them do it for me next time too. My hands are too shaky.

ReplyDeleteI gave up on screen protectors and Otterbox covers many years ago. The screen protectors always seemed to be extremely brittle and were always cracking or slowing the response to my touch and the Otterbox covers were so bulky and as you discovered, didn't play nice with accessories. I went to just buying Apples case for that particular phone. They are slim, have the right combination of grippy to slippy so that they don't slip out of my hand but slip in and out of my pocket easy enough. Although I have dropped my phone more times than I care to admit, I have yet to crack a screen. Even the thin cases protect it well enough.
ReplyDeleteI went from an iPhone 6 to an iPhone 11 so I'm hoping I still have a number of years left before I have to get another one.
Congrats on taking the plunge. I don't like change in my electronics which is why I still work Windows 7 on my laptop. We don't have cell service here so I don't have a smart phone though I am tempted just for the camera capabilities. Enjoy your new phone.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the batteries in these phones are designed to last for more than 5 years or so. I have a 12 Pro and am thinking about upgrading but not very hard. As you said, changing phones (or computers) is an intimidating process and there is always a learning curve. (at least for me) I tripped and dropped my phone and the front got smashed up a bit but with my new cover, it looks brand new. They are very protective!

ReplyDeleteYep, Same medically anxiety-producing symptoms with me when I change a phone. The store put the clear glass protector sheet on. We ordered the Otterbox cover from online, and my son put it on. The store also did the change from my old to my new, which took about 50 minutes. They even had a hiccup, so I wouldn't dare try it myself. Linda in Kansas

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new phone! I think I'll keep my old one for awhile longer. Whenever I do get a new one, I go to AT&T and also buy their screen protector and they put it on for me, perfectly.

ReplyDeleteWe upgraded from an 8 to a 12 about a year ago. The camera is very good and I use it almost exclusively now I don't use a screen saver, just hard plastic clear case with sparkles. :-)

I have an android and it works fine...if I ever learn how to use it. It was free at US Cellular.I had to pay for a fast charging charger and Leslie, my daughter, paid the tax but other than that, it was free.
ReplyDeletesince it took the 'experts' an hour to help with your simple request I now understand why phones are more a frustration than a help. I have a Google Pixel phone which is probably 4 years old but with its one small lens takes excellent photos. I usually carry my DSLR anyway.

The next time your Otterbox starts to crumble you can fill out a form on their website and they will send you a new replacement one for free, you just need to pay for the shipping which I don’t remember how much it was but it was cheaper than buying another brand new one. -Myra
