Art goes for a long jog one morning a week while I'm sleeping and walks whenever he can. During those walks/jogs he's always on the look-out for lost change which he then puts in a donation jar. It takes him a long while to build up enough to donate.
Whenever he finds money, he initially puts it on the kitchen counter for fun to show mom. She always gets excited when he finds something a little more substantial.... like a nickel. I think he's found a quarter only a handful of times in the years he's been on the hunt.
One morning, she couldn't wait to show us that she had found a coin too.
"I found a penny!" she proclaimed excitedly.
It was in very bad condition.
Art decided to use a magnifying glass to see if he could figure out what this coin really was.
Would you believe it's a one cent coin from the Commonwealth of the Bahamas?
What amazes me is that it looks like it's been sitting on the road for a long time, a really long time. Mom has been sweeping this street for maybe 20 years and it's only popped up now?
Gosh! I wonder which neighbor went to the Bahamas.
I've always heard finding a penny brings good luck but finding one from a country on the opposite side of the globe must bring extreme luck!

ReplyDeleteKay, cool coin--but I like that wonderful photo of your mom even more. :^) When my grandpa died in 1982, my grandma gave me his little pocket coinpurse. (Remember when men carried those?) It's where I store found change. :^)

ReplyDeleteI used to collect coins, and that was part of the appeal ... the mystery of how things show up and survive. I'm always on the lookout for pre-1959 pennies (when they changed the design) and pre-1964 quarters (which were actually made of silver). Rarely find one. Anyway, I agree. Your mom is in for some good luck!

ReplyDeleteIn the last year I found a 20 dollar bill on the curb. I also found a wallet about 5 years ago with the credit card still in it. That one went to the police.

ReplyDeleteSince the penny was taken out of circulation here years ago, it is rare to see them. I have a few in the bottom of a mug of knick knacks on a windowsill here.

ReplyDeleteMy daughter, Leslie, and I were at the Dairy Queen in Independence, Kansas one day a couple of weeks ago, and she found $11.00 out by the street near the curb.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was teaching the custodial staff would pick up change all year. At the end of the yer they would have enough to throw themselves a little party. It was a pretty big high school.

p.s. My grandmother always taught me to look at a coin before you pick it up. If it's a penny and it's 'heads up' you can still have a bit of luck with it. But if it's head's down, all the luck has been used up but it'll still spend like a penny! We have several rolls of gray, zinc pennies. ugly things... but probably quite valuable today.
