Totally Amazing Lunches for a Preschooler

I have a wonderful relative named Aya who is one of the most creative, artistic people I know. She is married to my cousin's son.

When their child entered preschool, 3 year old JO did not want to go. So Aya began preparing these elaborate lunches which JO loved showing off to her teachers.

I was absolutely flabbergasted. Looking at this, I would definitely want to eat it. 😋

And here's another one. Aya has used little slices of nori to make the faces on the teddy bear rice ball.

If I made mini sandwiches like these for my kids when they were growing up, I know they'd have loved it.

Uuuummmm.... But I wasn't this creative.

Then again, these are so cute, that I would just want to look at it and not eat it.

I do have the most talented relatives, by blood as well as marriage.

  1. Okay, that is above and beyond. What a wonderful treat. My kids would have thought they had prematurely entered lunch heaven. Love, love the rice ball teddy. All of it.

  3. I know if I started making lunches like that, I would be making two of them everyday. I nipped that in the bed by telling my two girls that if they don't like what the school serves, they are free to make their own lunch to take to school. Needless to say, they mostly eat hot lunches at school which cost a fraction of what those above would cost to make daily.

  4. WOW! Imagine all the preparation going into them each morning - getting up early and cooking, etc. What a lucky kid and your cousin's son is a fortunate man!

  5. My first reaction was that's a lot of food! My second was that would take a lot of time! Beautiful and creative. No doubt it worked.

  6. How cute, and encouraging! (My elementary school food was so bad in the '60s, and my parents wouldn't let me take my lunch, that I gave some of my lunch money to the janitor, and he brought me sandwiches from his home. My parents never knew. Guess that wouldn't fly these days.) Linda in Kansas

    1. That's amazing! You must have had the nicest custodian. I have to say our school lunches were great. At least that's what I remember. It was so different from what I was eating at home. I know the "olden days" school lunches had the most amazing shortbread cookies that people still try to imitate, but it can never be as good as your childhood memory. The funny thing is Art was on a different island, but he remembers the shortbread cookies too.

  18. That IS amazing! I think my kids generally got a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a bag of chips. Creative lunches really never occurred to me. How wonderful! I also like the idea of putting little notes inside.

  21. Amazing, indeed! The lunch is sprinkled with mom’s love. I think preschoolers have made their moms creative and inventive in filling a lunch box.
