Staring at My Hands

I was at a loss for something to write about and was looking at my hands and thought what stubby baby fingers I have.

I figured I should look this up online. You can find anything online.

Sure enough Wikipedia wrote about it:

Brachydactyly (Greek βραχύς 'short' plus δάκτυλος 'finger') is a medical term which literally means 'short finger'. The shortness is relative to the length of other long bones and other parts of the body. Brachydactyly is an inherited, dominant trait.

 So it's inherited?

I decided to check mom's hands. I use the ring finger line as a marker. Looks like mom's baby pinky is just a teeny bit under the crease line of her ring finger.

I've always remembered how beautiful mom's hands were when she was younger. However, at 94, all the work she's done are showing the proof of it on her hands.

Then I decided to text my baby brother and asked him to send me a photo of his artistic genius hand.

Nope.

His baby finger is above the crease line.

So then I asked my favorite daughter to send me a photo of her hand.

Yes... she was at work, but being my favorite (and only) daughter, she took a photo of her hand and texted it back for me. Hmmm.... She has beautiful hands. I think she inherited it from my mom. And nope. She did not inherit my stubby baby pinky.

It's too bad my favorite son lives on the other side of the world and was sleeping when I wrote this post.

OK... Now what shall I write about for next week?

I just looked at my feet. Nope. Never mind. My sister-in-law told my brother that I must have "time on my hands" since I'm staring at them.

What would she think of me if I asked him to send me a photo of his feet? 😂

POSTSCRIPT:

We were watching Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on TV. In the last scene Rey is burying Luke and Leia's lightsabers on Tatooine. She wraps the two lightsabers in a cloth to bury it and there is a shot of her hand.

Art startled me when he shouted, "Look! She has your baby finger!"

By golly! She does!

Ahhh... Maybe I've got some Force too. 😂😂😂

  4. Kay, your hands (and your mom's) look exactly like mine (in length and shape of fingers). And yes, your daughter has beautiful hands.. and long slender fingers.

  5. I have become aware of my feet - well one foot - lately as when I was exercising I noticed a few toes on my bigger foot was sort of purple. It isn't always this way. Should I be alarmed?

    1. I just looked up purple toes and it says you should consult a podiatrist to make sure it's not something serious.

  6. Had to look at mine and I'm with you - pinky below the crease line of ring finger.

    1. Hi Dee! Gosh! We haven't had an electric can opener in ages. You now what? I looked at Art's fingers and his baby finger is way past that ring finger line. That was a surprise! I'll need to ask my son to send me a photo of his hand.

    2. What do use for opening can goods? I wouldnt buy one for the longest time lol I am frugal. I started not making certain dishes because of the effort of opening of all the cans by my hand cranking opener! To quote you dear Kay Geesh!

  10. Your mother's hands are very beautiful, especially for her age. Your's, too. Neither of you appear to have arthritis that have twisted your fingers like mine are.

  12. I taught with a guy who claimed he could read palms. Kids just lapped this up. He would tell them the wildest things and they would go away looking at their hands. Albert , the teacher , just kept a straight face

  14. I think all of those hands are beautiful! Maybe the pinkie is shorter from processing too many pineapples. I took my 83 year-old mother to renew her Oklahoma driver's license. Yep, I'd tested her driving and she was very good. The license bureau tried to get her fingerprints, but couldn't. Her fingers were so old that they didn't have fingerprint patterns anymore! They still gave her the new license. My prints seems to be fading away now. Linda in Kansas

    1. Wow! Your mom is very impressive! I'm terrified of driving now. Gosh, I didn't know your fingerprints could fade. But you know what? My fingers do feel pretty smooth. I haven't done a fingerprint in ages.

    2. My Mom had a red 2-seater 1985 Mercedes convertible. So, no one dared to hit that car. She used it to go to the grocery store and beauty shop. She said she was taking it with her when she died. Unfortunately it was still in the garage when she left this world. We had to sell it quick because of the insurance cost! Lots of fun stories around that car. Linda in Kansas

  16. Haha, what a fun exploration of genetics and family traits! It's fascinating how certain characteristics can be passed down through generations. And it's great that your family indulged your curiosity by sending hand photos. As for the feet, maybe that's a story for another day! 😄

  18. *snort!* "Time on your hands!" LOL. Nope. Just that stubby pinky finger!

  19. No, indeed. Skip the feet. There is a lot of analysis of what your fingers say about you. What mine say is that they have been punched full of holes. Just checked. My little finger is very short, indeed. Eek.

  20. You deal with a versatile of subjects, which is fun. My ring finger is close to middle finger, much longer than index finger, and pinky is almost the same with the crease.
As to our talk on my blog, I wrote a reply.

  21. Wait, what does it mean that my pinky is way below the ring finger crease? I don't think my other bones are longer or is that why I'm short lol.
