Have You Heard of Affogato?

I mentioned earlier how my Hokkaido tour friend, Kay would often splash coffee over vanilla ice cream for dessert after dinner or whenever she had a chance. This is the first time I'd ever seen anybody do this.

When we got home, I sent this photo to Kay as a little joke.

However, I then learned that our friend Dave does the opposite. He puts a scoop of ice cream into his coffee.

I've found that when I put the ice cream in the coffee instead like Dave and then place my mug in the freezer for a bit, I really like the little icy crunch.

I've also added a few drops of peppermint mix that my wonderful cousin gave us which was fun.

When we were having our walk at the mall, I mentioned all this to Dave and he said it's called affogato.

I'd never heard of affogato so I looked it up.

I found this photo on New York Times Cooking website:

And this was from AI:

Affogato is a simple Italian dessert where a scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream is "drowned" (the meaning of affogato) with a shot of hot espresso, creating a contrast of hot and cold, bitter and sweet flavors. It's served immediately and can be enhanced with optional additions like a splash of liqueur (amaretto, Frangelico) or toppings like shaved chocolate.

But no. I think I'll stick to just adding that little scoop of vanilla ice cream to my coffee instead.

Uuummm...

I do also add a little chocolate milk to the coffee first before that little scoop of vanilla ice cream and it's perfect. And well... my cousin gave me these bottles of Skinny Mix so I add a little of this for fun.

So now I guess my mocha has turned into an affogato!

POSTSCRIPT: Art did look at my mocha affogato and said, "That's a bit more ice cream than you usually add to your coffee."

I told him it was just for my photo. ๐Ÿ˜„

  1. Hmm … since I only have coffee early (like today — 2 cups by 7am) I will probably never try this, but it does look interesting.

  3. I can't eat cow milk ice cream anymore and have never enjoyed coffee so unfortunately, this post doesn't tempt me in the slightest.

  4. Ah, I was searching my memory for the name affogato! Until I discovered creme brรปlรฉe it was a favorite indulgence in Italy. Now I'm thinking of returning, but probably will just stick with the less sophisticated root beer float.

    Cheers,

    1. Kay of Musings: ๐Ÿ˜„ I like root beer too actually. Hmmm…. I wonder if I should use my vanilla ice cream on some root beer today for lunch. I have a feeling my doctor would not be happy about my indulgences lately.

  5. As Ceci says, it is like a coffee float! I like how you customize your coffee to suit your tastes. I do the same! Mine is just a normal mocha although I use very specific chocolate and coffee for it. The milk isn't as critical.

  6. I have to correct myself on the milk--I've found that ultra-pasteurized milk foams much better than regular, giving me a better froth for my mocha.

  7. I do recall that you drink your coffee cold. Hot coffee would give a different result. :-)

  8. I think I would like the coffee over ice cream, chill it, then eat. Or, I get coffee ice cream from Haagen Daas. Yum!

  10. You are having too much fun with these mixtures. You mix good stuff together and it gets very good. I've never heard of this and I can't say the word either.

  13. Kay, I've always put ice-cream in my coffee (on occasion). It's very good. I've also put coffee liqueur over coffee as a fancy dessert for company. But lately I've been making brown butter coffee... (google it) it's also very good.! You make a brown butter syrup and add a little to your coffee - gives it a nice buttery caramel taste.

  14. We appreciate your making camera-ready coffee so we can fully understand the correct amounts. Probably healthier than chemically-flavored Coffee Mate creams. A friend gets cartons of Premier Protein protein drinks to add to her coffee. Would that make it healthier? Hmmmm, those have lots of chemicals too. Linda in Kansas

    1. I told Art maybe I should buy a carton of vanilla and a carton of chocolate ice cream to test them out further. He said I should just get one carton of Neapolitan. He's such a spoilsport.
