One side of the house was showing quite a bit of wood damage from the elements so I thought it would be a good idea to give it a good caulking. I used some almond colored caulking I happened to have. Unfortunately it freaked mom out the following morning. She thought something had gone drastically wrong with the house.
This caulk is supposed to last 50 years. I guess I won't be around to know if it's really true. I hope I didn't just caulk termites into the wood panels.
Luckily I had left over house paint from 5 years ago which worked very well. When the paint dried, you couldn't tell where I'd painted.
Working on this side of the house gave Art another idea for a house project. Gutters, downspouts and a rain barrel! We'll see.

DeleteThat is pretty much the way it seems to be with home maintenance.....on thing always leads to another, inside or outside. It looks like you did a really good job.
ReplyDeleteFifty years?!? In my experience home improvement products never last as long as advertised...but even so, that patch should be good until you're not in that house any more.

ReplyDeleteOh yes! She can get water from a little spicket to pour into a little bucket from which to water her plants. She's looking forward to that.
DeleteRain barrels hooray. All our downspouts are drained underground to our cistern where we use a pump in the summer to water the garden.

Sigh...the year is almost over and no home projects attempted or completed. First taxes, then my back started giving problems, then our washer/dryer went out, then we decided to invest the balance of the year at the dentist. Darn and now I realize I need a root canal after having the crown already on. Being so close to retirement (year and a half) I think we'll just wait it out and not attempt a large remodeling project.

DeleteThanks for your kind words...yup dentist said it was 50/50 about needing a root canal so he said just wait and see. Imagine they can do it from the side he said. My back pain is manageable but the work I do (especially when we do floor jobs) cancels any progresss I make from PT exercises. Husband has his share of aches and pains, foot and back too, so he still needs me at work. But I can smell retirement lol...in fact I think of ourselves as "retired but working" so I don't pressure myself to work more.

DeleteEven if you build a brand new house, you only get about seven years of grace, then the maintenance projects start kicking in. Actually, I think Hawaii is rather hard on houses. Nothing ever takes a rest, while wherever there is Winter, there is recuperation time. On the other hand, there are home maintenance enthusiasts like my son-in-law, Mike, whose idea of a good weekend is to have a PROJECT.

When it comes to proper home maintenance for wintertime, you will definitely want to make sure the roof is up to par and that the house is fully insulated.
