Art likes to do races. I don't. I'm just not into walking long distances. If you add getting up at ungodly hours to do so and then sun... maybe rain, you'll find I'm even less excited. On top of all this, if you ask me to walk it alone, it just won't happen.
This past February, my friends, Diane and Dave weren't able to walk with me. Art's cousin, Renee was going to, but her knees were injured at the last minute. My brother, Dennis agreed to fill in for her. I had all kinds of conditions and back up plans in case either of us didn't feel we could finish. He has occasional gout attacks. I sometimes have knee aches.
Dennis and I did train ahead of time walking longer and longer distances to make sure we could at least make a good showing on the day of the Great Aloha Run (Walk).
Incredibly, we finished.
I told Art then that this coming year, I wouldn't be doing it. Doing the run four times was ample. I'd done my duty. I can relax. My muscles can be free to age as much they want.
Nope. Art talked to Dennis last night and asked him if he'd walk with me again. My brother said yes.
No way. Are you kidding? I guess now that he's had his Kanreki, his life clock has been reset so that he's got more energy. It's like childbirth. He's forgotten the effort it took to do the 8+ mile race.
Art wants the three of us to stay in shape and not let our bodies fall into sloth. Actually, I'll bet he just wants to get those Training and Finisher t-shirts. And maybe Dennis liked the bananas and cookies we got at the end of the race.
Or maybe he just wants to keep us healthy too.

I think you are both amazing and Art is great that he motivates you all to do it. He would need a crane to motivate me I think lol. I guess it doesn't hurt to train either and then see what happens nearer the race. How often does Art train - we need a post about that so i can feel bad about how slack I am lol.

ReplyDeleteit's a good thing, I suppose!
ReplyDeletegood for you even if you go screaming...lol~
ReplyDeleteArt wouldn't push you if he didn't love and care about you ;-)
ReplyDeleteI guess I am more like Art: hoping I can keep you motivated and not fall into sloth. You never struck me as one who would do that anyway! :-)
ReplyDeleteI want to be healthy... I really do... But I just hate to exercise.
DeleteI'm the same way, hate to exercise. It's not the sweating part but switching gears and being part of the physical world is always a sensory shock and chore to me. I'm all cerebral lol
ReplyDeleteBut you have a wonderful supporting family to encourage you. That's a blessing!

I like the term "falling into sloth". I realize I fight against that every day. It would be easy to do when things hurt and I'm tired from my latest wave of insomnia. But I keep moving!
ReplyDeleteEight miles might be too much for me anymore. Four is about the max in one stretch now. Too many parts are wearing out with arthritis. We finally have rain so I will be getting on the stationary bike this morning. I can read while I ride so I can finally get back to my current Swedish mystery novel while I ride. I don't have to sit in my recliner and be slothful. Now I have to find something I can do while I watch football this afternoon.
Good for Art and Dennis for keeping you going!
Yay! Do the Aloha Run every year with your loved ones, Kay. Something to add to your memory bank.
