I have a cousin who told me at one time that she was a bossy older sister and she knew she tended to "boss" her brothers around. I have noticed however that the siblings all get along and are there for each other.
I know I'm bossy. I've probably bossed my brother, Dennis around shamefully throughout our lives. Luckily, he knows how to ignore me.
We did everything together as children and were rarely apart. We fought and laughed and learned and had fun.
When Dennis began college he came to live with Art and me for part of his college years before we moved to the mainland.
We did everything together. Most people thought he was Art's brother since they were always riding bikes or whatever together and looked more alike.
When Art and I moved to the mainland, we each began separate lives although we kept in close contact.
I happen to know that Art's sister who also happens to be older probably bossed him around too. And they are also very close. They talk to each other once a week to keep tabs on what they are each doing.
My daughter, Tiffany is the older sister and she also is bossy. (I know you're reading this, Tif. Don't deny it.) She bossed her brother around too, but also loved and protected him and made sure she kept in contact with him.
When we were talking one day about siblings not getting along Dennis said, "Maybe they need to have a bossy oldest sister."
"Are you saying I'm bossy?" I asked.
He just smiled.

Adorable post Kay. Wow look at you, you know you have not changed. I have one brother and three sisters. And guess what? Three of us are older than him and one younger. We all boss him around. He is a gorgeous guy, very laidback and we are very lucky to have him as a brother. I hope he would say the same about us although I am not sure, lol. Loved this post a lot.
ReplyDeleteI am totally not surprised that your brother is gorgeous, just knowing what you and your daughter look like. Your parents have/had such fantastic sense of humors that your relationships must have been full of loving fun and closeness.
DeleteMy you were (and are) so pretty!
ReplyDeleteMy friend Mary that we went to Peru with is very bossy. But she also organized our whole trip. I guess the world needs bossy people!
My daughter is also bossy and extremely organized. :-)
Delete1:57 AM? 4:49 AM?? Holy guacamole! I take the dog out at 7:00 AM and consider that pretty darn early.
DeleteI never had brothers or sisters so can't comment on what it's like to be bossed, or to boss a sibling. But my two sons, who are two years apart, had a difficult relationship when they were younger and aren't that close now. I think the older one saw the younger one as a threat and needed to fight for the upper hand all the time, perhaps if he'd been bossy it would have been different.
ReplyDeleteLove the post! My son has 2 older sisters. One is in particular bossy with him, and they are very close. Over the years I've had to give the talk that he only has one mother, not three. One day my oldest daughter when they were about 13 and 18 told me I need to discipline him and I said I would, but I never get a chance because they always jump in before I can!
ReplyDeleteI'll bet he loved having three mothers to watch over him. :-)
DeleteI am the bossy older sister, too. I think I was pretty awful to my sister when we were kids, but we are as close now as any two people can be! She saw me as her protector, while I saw her as my charge. It worked well...
ReplyDeleteI have two older brothers. One is like a diplomat, the other is scatterbrained. Those types are pretty easy to function around, although I can't say I "bossed" them. Or did I, without them realizing it? DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteAhhhh... so you were the baby sister that they had to protect. I don't think you could have bossed them around. What fun to have a diplomat and a scatterbrain for brothers. LOL!
Deletehow sweet...I'm an only child-can tell I missed out on lots with no siblings!
ReplyDeleteBossy is the preogerative of first borns. They know everything!
ReplyDeleteNo siblings and probably suffering from only-child syndrome....whatever that's supposed to be. Whenever I say or do something, that's the response I get from not too kind people.

lovely post Kay!
ReplyDeleteKay, I love that picture of you and Dennis in 1954!!! So cute!! My older daughter still boss' her little sister around! I think it is in the oldest siblings nature! By the way I am an older sister, but my younger sister bossed us around-LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteI once confessed to my sister that I wished that I had had an older sister. I surprised myself, as I didn't really know where that came from. Still don't. I'm pretty hard to boss around as I dig in my heels. However, my default mode is to be cooperative if everybody is being nice. The Golden Rule applies here.
ReplyDeleteFull disclosure: my sister had problems with my mother She was undergoing therapy at the time and her interpretation was that, psychologically, I was longing for a different mother. However, as the first-born, I was totally confident that Mom loved me.
Deletemy mom is bossy. am the last of the children so i've been bossed around a lot. don't much fancy it.
ReplyDeletehave a blessed weekend.
With six siblings, I'm not sure who was the bossy one growing up, but probably the oldest, my older sister. Jill definitely was the leader of Jake, but he was not easy to "boss around" They are close.
ReplyDeleteNow my younger sister is the bossiest, and Irene is definitely bossier than Isaac. Is it a girl thing, the little mother in them?
hillarious. Mind you, there's no funny in real life I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteIt is so good to hear about siblings who get along well even if there was a little bossing early in life. Your pictures are so cute :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat post, lovely to read, made me smile and love all your photos.
