One of Art's wonderful cousins sent us a coupon for 30% off of one shopping trip at Longs (CVS) Drug store on Saturday or Sunday. We don't have any pressing need for very many things, BUT on this one day we have fun buying some things that we would not ordinarily buy.
So here's what we bought. Mailers, dog treats for our granddog, Mungo, 2 gallon Ziploc bags for traveling, magnetic picture holders for our whiteboard, traveling toilet paper, lingerie bag, coffee, eye drops, snacks, etc.
We also bought mom some things that she's been wanting. There were hair conditioner, make-up supplies, birthday cards for her many grandchildren, great grandchildren and everyone's spouses, food things and this and some of that.
It was a fun day to splurge.
On the way home we decided to take mom for some saimin. She loves noodles.
"But you'll be using up all the money you saved today," objected mom.
"What are we saving our money for, mom? I asked. "Our children and grandchildren? I just read a forwarded mail someone sent me about what Confucius was supposed to have said. He said we shouldn't save our money for our children because they must fulfill their own destiny."
"That's true," said mom.
"And shouldn't our children have the experience of struggling to make their own money so they can feel good about their accomplishment? Wouldn't that strengthen them and not weaken their resolve?"
"That is very true," said mom smiling broadly. "Yes, let's go for the saimin."
And we did.
And she loved it.

What a fun "savings" trip.....and I think spending some of the savings on the saimin was just the right thing to do.

DeleteHow expensive are saimin noodles? They must be quite a delicacy.
ReplyDeleteActually, it's very inexpensive. They're only about $6.00 a bowl so we didn't spend ALL of our wonderful savings. :-)

To be honest... I'm really not so sure Confucius even said that since it is a Forwarded mail and people make up all kinds of things.

ReplyDeleteSigh... I'm afraid not, Dianne. When we lived in Chicago, we just ate Maruchan ramen because we couldn't find anything comparable to saimin in the Midwest.

Given the choice between a satisfying noodle and a satisfied offspring I would go for the noodle every time.

ReplyDeleteLongs Drug stores has a long, well loved history in Hawaii. When CVS bought the store, they wisely kept the name.
Deleteahhhh, have to be mustard cabbage otherwise no can. But I realize the pickings are slim nowadays for choice of saimin stands.
ReplyDeleteThat was Shiro's Saimin. We were really surprised at the VERY generous serving of nappa. Usually it's just the hard white part, but this was great. Zippy's uses choi sum, but not too much.
DeleteSo wise, children no matter how we love them and yes we help in many ways, but it's good for them to learn to take care of themselves too. Hopefully they will always know we'll be there for them no matter what, and I would love to try that dish. The next time we visit the islands I will do just that. I long to visit them again. But, our next trip will be after Gregg retires. Just learned my niece is getting married to her young man and we are over the moon. We have a year to get ready but we're off to Germany in October 2013.
