Several people have been telling me that instead of bringing a heavier, bulkier laptop with them on travel you should just bring a tablet. I like the idea of carrying something lighter when you're traveling, but I'm still dubious that a tablet can take the place of a laptop. For one thing could you upload photos from your camera to your iPad?
Turns out that YES, you can! However, we did encounter one problem. Art bought a 5 in 1 card reader on Star Advertiser Hot Deals ($10), but after waiting forever for it, found out it was the wrong one. It was for the iPad 3rd generation or older which had a 30 pin connector. Our iPad 4 has a Lightning connector. Annoying!

That's OK. Our son, Jon is very happy to get what we can't use.
So off we went again and just bit the bullet and paid the $30 for this very expensive Apple Lightning card reader. The salesperson said it would be a while before there would be paraphernalia for the iPad 4 made by other manufacturers (knocks offs) because of that new connection.
I'm still not convinced that we can do without our laptop on our travels. I guess we'll find out some day.

I had NO trouble at all doing without my laptop on our trip to Italy and Greece. My iPad was so much easier to tote along, uploading photos was easy,...I can't think of any reason why I'd want to go back to taking the laptop on a trip. We're headed to Eastern Europe soon and my trusty iPad will be traveling with us, for sure.

I'm wondering if you'll be bringing your iPhone. I was told to leave it at home or to NEVER turn it on because you could get hit with overseas charges.
DeletePut your iPhone on airplane mode and you'll be fine.
DeleteGosh! We were told that airplane mode is not good enough. They said that when you turn your phone on, even on airplane mode it collects data or something or other. It's safer not to bring it overseas unless you're on some kind of overseas travel type plan or whatever. If you do bring it overseas, you should keep it turned off.

ReplyDeleteI didn't realize that not only the iPhone5 but the new iPad have different connectors. What a drag! But I'm glad to know I can get a card reader and put pictures on my iPad that way. Do you have a keyboard to add or do you use the one that comes with it? I can't do much with that one myself. :-)
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't have a keyboard. That's always been a concern but I can do short emails with the iPad. My problem is that I can't work on my digital photo album on the iPad while on the trip.

ReplyDeleteThe last few vacations we've gone on, the only "electronics" we've taken are our phones. We bring extra memory cards for the camera, and each night edit the pictures, removing the bad ones so there's enough room. However, I don't think we take as many pictures as you do :-)
ReplyDeleteMy sister travels to Chicago often and only takes her iPad. Of course she is kept so busy with five of her eight grandchildren that she doesn't have much time to be on computer. I take my Kindle but we only travel to doctor's appointments in Tulsa, only 80 miles away so I haven't missed my computer yet on those brief intervals. The only way I know to add pictures on my Kindle is to email them to my account and download them to my Kindle or to transfer pictures to and from my laptop.

I don't even like having to buy different cords when switching dumb phones. I think they make more money off of the required accessories.
Possibly like Granny Annie, occasionally I've had patients and their families show me their Advanced Directives, list of meds, or description of a rare illness, right from their electronic device.

ReplyDeleteTech is getting to hexagon pretty big luxury for us...considering the rate of breakdown and the high cost of accessories and supplies like ink for the printer. I really do envy when I hear someone doesn't use a computer and still has landline. I refuse to make the latter switchover to all mobile.

I have to admit I've never found a gadget that does everything I need to do. I have an iPhone, iPad, Kindle, etc. One thing that I found frustrating was blogging. I wanted to blog from my iPad. Solution--and iPad app "Posts." It wasn't free but it's the best I've found for my situation. A little more tedious than blogging from my desktop but I use it frequently and it would certainly be nice for traveling. I actually can work from both my desktop and iPad on the same post, and frequently do. I've only used pictures taken from my iPhone but they work well. I do not like the camera on the iPad. Pictures made with my iPhone stream to my iPad. I know the program is capable of a lot more than I've done. I've only had it for a short time. There are times when it's preferable to blog from the desktop if using a lot of cut and past information but for a vacation using pictures from you're iPhone it's a snap.

I like the thought of a lighter tool to carry around, but I can't imagine seeing anything as it is formatted on a tablet.

ReplyDeleteWe didn't take a laptop to Mexico. We would just go to an Internet cafe every now and then, where we could upload photos. My Kindle Fire was OK for surfing the web, e-mail and even posting to my blog, because our B & B had we-fi.
