I confess that I used to have this little fascination with shiny things... crystal, diamonds, cubic zirconium, glass, glitter. I collected glass and crystal vases, cups, etc. when I was younger. When we moved to Hawaii, much of it was sold, donated or given away.
Recently, my aunt's friend was downsizing and my mother was drawn to a set of glass plates. She was convinced my nephew's wife would love it. As it turned out, she didn't want them. Neither did anyone else. I told mom I didn't want them because we already have too many dishes that we don't use. As you know I'm now into practical dishes like Corelle or Corningware.
I brought them to our Tai chi class and no one wanted them until finally somebody offered to take them if nobody else wanted them.
I had a set of beautiful china at one time that I ended up leaving with our daughter, Tiffany. They're tucked away somewhere and unused. I'm thinking beautiful china that you can't put in the dishwasher is becoming a thing of the past... just like these glass pieces.

That is true. I love dishes but there is only room for so many. My husband has this thing about wanting everything to match. I think that is so boring.
ReplyDeleteI guess they might be a thing of the past. But more importantly they are also a tie to the past. I think of all the family celebrations and special occasions that we had using my mother's china that I now own.
ReplyDeleteI have a crystal bowl that belonged to my great grandmother, and I cherish it. But I only use it for special occasions. I once loved shiny, pretty dishes like these, too. Times have changed, haven't they?
ReplyDeleteI have my MIL's china which is a soft delicate dessert rose and I really should get it down and use it! I have some dishwasher safe china as well, and now I really must get my act together!!
ReplyDeleteI still remember stuffed celery with cream cheese at thanksgiving sitting in one of those pretty dishes. Traditions!
ReplyDeleteI have dishes that look just like the top two in the picture that were my mother's. Rarely used, but at least they are in a cabinet in the kithcen instead of in a box in the basement like my china.

ReplyDeleteWe're all different! I don't use a dishwasher so I like delicate china and glass. I love cut glass and pressed glass bowls and dishes. They show off my little cakes and pastries to perfection.
ReplyDeleteI have a cake plate that is similar in design to the top, left, oval plate. I put it in the dishwasher. The only thing we don't put in the dishwasher now are the knives I got from my friend when she died. They have wooden handles and Terry says the dishwasher will destroy them so he hand washes them.
ReplyDeleteI remember hearing china has to be washed from time to time to keep them from cracking they are so delicate.
ReplyDeleteYou started me thinking. LOL One daughter has three good sets, the other two. I lent my best friend three more. If you live a downsized life and inherit volumes of dishes, they go. I have one set of colorful Southern Potteries flowers, but for everyday I use "Irroquois" Russel Wright. Nice plain stuff. :)

My aunt had a candy dish like that; probably from the '20s or '40s. She kept it full, but each time I visited, my Dad made me ask permission, even though it was plunk in the middle of the coffee table. DrumMajor

ReplyDeleteSo retro and the best part is they all match as a set. I'm not fussy about what I use for dishes. Study plain dishes suit me fine.
ReplyDeleteHaving an attraction for "shinies" must be in the genes! However, the older I get, the more practical I become. I do not want any dust collectors, well--at least I don't want any more dust collectors. Sigh. Holly
