The Newest Hot Thing in Hawaii: Korean Scrubbers

Last Christmas one of my Zumba buddies, Irene gave all of us these dish scrubbers.  They were so pretty that I didn't know what it was at first.

I thought it might be a hot pad or a doily.    What a surprise to learn they were dish scrubbers.

When I used it I found that it took just a dot of dish soap to create a whole LOT of bubbles in the pad and could almost wash a sink full of dishes.  Then you could rinse out the soap very easily.

We tried looking for more of these beautiful pads at craft fairs, but couldn't find them.

One night, I mentioned these incredible pads to my friend, Diane.  She is a teacher and said she'd received these from one of her parents.

Diane very kindly gave me one of them which I'm loving.

When I mentioned how much I loved the scrubbers, Irene said her sister-in-law crocheted them with a special Korean yarn and sold them at 3 for $10. The yarn is unavailable in Hawaii.  She has to rely on people going to Korea or purchase them herself when she travels there.

Guess what Tiffany and Jonathan will be getting for presents soon?

  4. I've knitted or crocheted scrubbies using strips of nylon tulle. They work well for scrubbing dishes, but knitting with tulle is hard on the hands. Wish that Korean yarn were sold here!

  5. Like Jean, I crochet scrubbies from heavy duty nylon net. My family and friends grab them up before I can even think about selling them. They are great for cleaning non-stick pots and pans, bathrooms, ceramics, car windows, brushing lint, etc. I wonder if that Korean yarn is nylon. It kind of looks like it. Wish I knew where to get some too. Will research that.

    1. That looks really similar but costs twice as much and they don't show you photos of the choices, do they? Still, looks like this is almost what I have. How interesting!!! I should tell Irene to sell it on the web. On the other hand, her sister-in-law just got an order for 400 of these things to give as gifts for wedding guests. She's going to have a hard time meeting that order as it is.

  12. These look lovely and what a thoughtful and useful gift. I have a friend who likes to knit dish cloths out of a certain type of sturdy material, and she also makes the tea towels to match. I received these for a gift a while back and I am still using them as they wash very well.

  17. I'm.sure the Korean yarn is the special secret ingredient to the scrubbies' success. I'm typing on kindle fire. I tried clicking on your comments link and got a windows operation failed message. I had to restore my laptop recently and forgot to update windows from factory default. That could be the reason. I'm still waiting for over 100 updates to install.

    1. I think it's that special yarn too. Wow! It's not easy to use your Fire for this, is it? I hope your laptop is up to snuff right away.

  18. Hi Kay, it's working OK. After the updates, I don't get the windows message anymore. Had to come back to your site to try it again. Typing on kindle fire is nuts. Especially since it's not easy to use special marks like apostrophes lol

  19. They are wonderful, definitely bring a bit of sunshine into chores. I wonder if they are imported here in England.

  20. I think I may try crocheting that pineapple design scrubbie. Seems fast and easy to make. I have used plarn in the past but it doesn't hold water in order to suds up. This gives me the idea of using a silk or cotton type yarn with the plarn.
