I wasn't worried yesterday. I'd heard that Tropical Storm Flossie was weakening when it hit our cooler waters.
Our skies are gorgeous and the temperatures were lovely today. It's been a peaceful Sunday.
However I've been getting a ton of weather warnings all day. There have been special news broadcasts telling us to get our prescriptions filled, stock up on 3 + days of food, look at our insurance papers, etc. I thought this was a tropical storm, not a hurricane.
Our neighbor just cut down his tall palm tree today for fear it could fall on the house.
OK, now I'm starting to worry.
We brought our shoes and slippers in. We moved our smaller potted plants away from the wind. I checked our food supply. (I've got 4 mini loaves of mango bread and Art's tuna cans.) We've got a case of bottled water.
It's going to hit the Big Island first tomorrow. I'll be reading Hattie's Web to see what happens. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her and her family because they are pretty exposed.
Judging from what she says, I'll see if I need to get out to stock up on more supplies.
Meanwhile, we went out today to get more shingles and Art used roof caulk to secure our roof. I'm hoping our solar panels are OK. I'm hoping the tree outside our house doesn't fall.

It's hard to imagine something awful could happen when it was so beautiful today.

ReplyDeleteWon't be a boring Monday, eh? I've been watching from the KITV news website. Looks like 30-50 mph winds, maybe, with lots of rain. In case power goes out, you're supposed to have canned food and bottled water for a week. Do you still have that big jug for hurricane times? I think your team will do fine, as you've thought to prepare, even if you don't need it. Good wishes for calm weather and prayers are flying in to you from Kansas. Aloha, DrumMajor

ReplyDeleteHoping Flossie calms down and only provides you with some rain and no winds. As an old Florida girl, I am used to the drill. Extra medicines and cash are important for with out power, debit cards don't work. Don't forget water to flush toilets. Take care and be safe

ReplyDeleteI agree...we're so used to forecasts much worse than the actual storm. Just hope Flossie turns out weaker too, but husband says he heard it is heading straight over us.

I saw the more recent weather maps showing how it went around the Big Island and is now plowing down directly toward you and me. I can see from my window that town side is completely clouded over.

ReplyDeleteWell, I was at Ft Shafter all day for a class and we were released at 2 to go and take care of the homefront. Strange clouds and visibility on the way home. Winds up just a little and all the outside items are secured. Looks like it's weakening. Guess we just wait it out. No worry!
ReplyDeleteAll the city workers were sent home early and shelters have been set up. The maps now show the storm breaking up, but Oahu seems to still be preparing for a hurricane. I'm getting mixed messages here. I have no cans of Spam, but I do still have a couple cans of corned beef. LOL It's 4:00 now. I hope I can still laugh at midnight.

If you don't mind your phone exploding at times, you will get every notification on island on *everything* related to emergency management, such as traffic accidents and road closures/blocks, weather watches/warnings/updates (like what's going on now), earthquakes, tsunami warnings or non warnings and the like. It really is a good tool. It is a great way to stay informed of things relevant to emergency management available to the general public and especially first responders!
