Bad Car Day

Oh yes!  It was one of those days when bad things happened.

I've seen in the news that Hawaii was listed as having the worst drivers in the US.  When I looked it up, I don't see the actual report that says that.  However, I do keep seeing news reports of bike riders getting hit, people driving through the post office, hitting pedestrians, etc.

Damage is much worse than it looks.
We'd gone to the Marukai grocery store and parked carefully.  When we got out, we saw that the car on our driver's side had left and another car had squeezed in.  I couldn't believe they could park so close without knocking off our side view mirror.  Art had a LOT of difficulty getting into the car.  It's a good thing he's thin.  Unfortunately he'd been concentrating so hard on getting into the car without hitting the car next to us that we didn't see the damage they'd done to our car until we got home.  They must have driven in using the Braille method.  It was really upsetting to see this!  They didn't leave a note on our car to apologize or offer to pay for the rather unsightly damage they did to the rear of our Prius.  Art said it was probably an older person since most of the people going out on Tuesdays to shop are seniors.

As if that wasn't bad enough, there were more problems waiting for us.  One of Art's friends asked for help moving some things with our van so Art said we needed to put some air in the tires and do some other errands.  When he tried to start the van, we discovered the battery was dead.  We'd been intending to drive the van to keep the battery charged, but forgot.  Sigh...

Art called AAA motor club and Trevor came out and started the van for us.  Thank goodness it was an easy fix.  Art showed him the damage on the Prius and Trevor said he was bummed because he had a bad car day too.  An older woman had backed right into his truck and dented it in the morning.

Since we had to cheer ourselves up and charge the van's battery now that Trevor had started it, we decided to go for a drive and get some shave ice.  (No, it's spelled correctly.  That's what we call it in Hawaii.)

We went to our favorite shave ice stand at Waikele and shared our melona-lichee shave ice.

We were feeling pretty good now.

Then we looked around us at all the shower trees and our spirits lifted.

It's  hard to stay aggravated when there's so much beauty around us.

  2. I'm not too sure what shave ice is, or whether we have it in the UK, but there looks to be a huge amount of it, so no wonder you had to share it. Cars are a pain in the proverbial aren't they?

  3. Thank you for reminding me that I had better drive our van today. It has been sitting quite a while and I need to keep the battery charged too.

Why "shave" ice? I would have to say "shaved". Would they kick me out of Hawaii?

  4. That shave ice is HUGE! No wonder you shared it, Kay. I am so sorry to hear about your bad car day, and shame on that person for banging up your car and not even leaving a note.

  7. Good for you for letting the beauty around you ease the aggravation of car problems. (Of course, some shave ice helps too).

  8. It's the ying/yang-there are always problems but the trick is not to focus on them but the beauty and blessings around us!

  9. Oooo, I hate when that happens. I parked one time in a rather strangely marked parking lot and when I came out I had to get in on the passenger side and crawl over the console to get behind the wheel. Just as I wiped the sweat from my brow and snapped the seat belt there came the sweet young thing to hop in the very closely parked car to wave at me and smile and pull out. Good Grief!

  10. I'd suspect, if it was an older person who dinged your car, that they may not have even heard it or became aware of it. Did you share your shave ice with the car and van?....they were the ones with the owies! Glad the treats and flowers calmed the busy day. Looks like the Hawaiian version of the Japanese cherry blossoms with all of those shower trees. Cheers, DrumMajor

  11. Ah, sad. So sorry about that, that is frustrating, isn't it? We had that happened just recently. My husband still talks about it everytime he sees the same dent and scratch on the door. That shave ice looks so refreshing!!

  12. It's shave ice here. I see it often at fairs or in food courts. The kids love it. I never tried it on the theory it's just a big snow cone.

  13. Mrs Lenman bought her car on the mainland about six months before we moved here. When she used to work in Pearl City, the parking stalls at her work were tight. Sure enough, at the end of work one day, she called me just after she got into the car and said someone had dinged her car. When she got home, I looked at it, and it appeared that someone opened up their car door and hit her car with it. If that wasn't bad enough, the next week the same thing happened - this time on the opposite side of the car!

With the bad traffic, tight parking everywhere, people getting caught driving without licenses and insurance *after* being involved in an accident, and the 'buss up' roads around here, it's no wonder Hawaii has this reputation. (I think Oahu is the worst out of the islands for traffic. Maybe it needs to be clarified by the press when they state that.) Anyway, most of the time whenever we go out now, we take my truck. No problems!

  14. We have a dent on the side of our van from a car trying to park in a stall that had a shopping cart in the stall. As the driver pulled in the shopping cart banged our door. My husband was waiting for me in the car while that happened and didn't step out to check. Fortunately that was our work van so we're not too upset but I certainly see it everytime...yuk.

Drivers in Hawaii are getting impatient these days and everyone seems to have a "me first" mentality. We are losing the old courteous lifestyle we once knew in the islands. I think our generation was the last to have known the old Hawaii. The high cost of living; congestion AND computer devices in our life does not help to slow down the pace.

  15. Cars are a necessity in most cities and they get banged up and require considerable maintenance. I really wish I lived in a city like San Francisco where there is plenty of public transportation.

We are awaiting a call from Terry's mechanic for a couple of parts so the AC switch on his 1991 Mazda will again function. Until then, with our 102 degree days baking us, he's taking my car when he has to go out.

Glad your Prius only had a few scratches and not a whole banged up fender.

  16. The shave ice Art has looks inviting on a warm summer day. Glad you had a minor incident with the car. Some accidents are awful. While we were living in Hononlulu, someone driving a car ran into a group of prople crossing Ala Moana Blvd and killed several members of the family. Now that's awful. Dianne

  17. Could it be tourists in rental cars unfamiliar with the area causing all the problems. I know in Florida during tourist season, driving was scary.
That shave ice is huge. And that is one serving? Smart to share.

  18. You two sure know how to do it up right! Your positive attitudes and 'get-over-it' solutions are inspiring. Thanks for the lessons, I love them. Keep them coming, Kay.

That shave ice Art has is making me want one, soooooo yummy looking!

  20. I'm glad your day had a happy ending. We need to keep driving our van too. I think it has been a while now!
I think that is what we call a snow cone.
