We had fun this past Saturday.
We went to the Richardson Super Garage Sale next to the Aloha Stadium at the 8:00 opening time. They don't have this sale all the time and we've enjoyed getting a few things every so often so we decided to have a look.
I'm afraid all I brought home this time was a $1.00 stamp.
Funny how spending $1.00 could add a little cheer to my day.
Our next stop was Going Green Recycling which was at the old Aiea Sugar Mill. The problem for us was that we didn't know where the Old Aiea Sugar Mill was because it's gone. The map we had didn't list Halewiliko Street and our Prius GPS was no help. Google mapping finally helped us locate where they were doing the collection.
We brought clothes, an old laptop, old eye glasses, toys and towels.
They were also collecting computers, printers, cartridges, cellphones, scrap metal, appliances, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, heat pumps, used cooking oil, batteries, bicycles, HI-5 beverage containers, hearing aids, white socks for Afghanistan, prom dresses, women's business suits, pet food, blankets, household items, incandescent light bulbs and canned food for the Hawaii food bank.
Apparently this was their first event. There's going to be another one at McKinley High School on August 24th from 9 AM - 1 PM.

I guess what made it the most fun of all was seeing our friend, Claire who was helping to collect and organize. I really admire people who give their time to make their community a better place to live.
I've found a few early morning fun things to do, like the Farmer's Market. Tried some goat cheese, which can be powerful, but tasty in little servings. Glad you're going on local adventures. DrumMajor

ReplyDeleteI find going to garage sales so much fun. If not to buy items, just to get out of the house and meet folks. Living in a small community, I find it a little more challenging to find the garage sales so we need to travel a little, so we need to make plans prior... take care!

DeleteIn fact, most of your blog subjects have revolved around this theme...repurposing (aka helpful household hints), going solar, using a more fuel efficient car. Even living frugally is earth friendly...nothing wrong with being a good saver so you are well able to spend your savings in more productive investment oriented ways....lol I had to double read the title and sat there confused why L...w was mentioned.

DeleteSure glad you put up a picture of your "stamp." All i could picture was a postage stamp. Thought it must really be something if you paid a dollar for it! The Santa stamp will be fun at Christmas.

ReplyDeleteReusing and Recycling, what a wonderful alternative to filling our land fills. I rarely buy anything useful at garage sales but I still enjoy going. They are just fun.
ReplyDeleteDick is very serious about recycling, but he isn't very serious about getting the bags and bags of recycling out of the shed and off to wherever they go.
ReplyDeleteWe've got to have another garage sale soon, and I'm not looking forward to it. I'm sure glad other people (like you) enjoy them, because I sure don't. Not sure why. I have two good friends who drag me to garage sales and thrift shops whenever I visit them, maybe that's why.
