A few years ago, my granddaughter was having a little difficulty agreeing to the idea that being toilet trained was a good idea. When we visited them in Chicago, I explained to KC the need to allow food to pass through her system and allow the wastes to exit her body properly. While her parents took a week long cruise, I set up a chart, got some tiny cookie rewards and her favorite drinks and commenced to train her. KC is quite bright and caught on by the time her parents returned.
KC proudly showed her parents the chart I'd made along with the stickers she'd gotten for a job well done.
Well... my daughter, Tiffany has been on my case about remembering to exercise on the days that I'm not at my Zumba class. She told me that I needed to get a calendar and mark the days I did my exercising since my osteopenia had deteriorated to osteoporosis.
"Sure", I said. I figured she'd never know for sure anyway.
"And mom...." said Tiffany. "I'm going to tell KC about your exercising and she's going to want to see your chart on Skype."
"What???" I was aghast.
"You helped KC with her toilet training. It's only right that she help you stay healthy too." I know Tiffany could hardly contain her chuckles.
But not Art. When Tiffany told him the plan the next day, he burst out laughing!

oh Kay they "got you" well and good!!!
ReplyDeleteYou taught them well my friend!
ReplyDeleteThat's just what I need! Can KC be MY trainer as well as yours, Kay?
ReplyDeleteToo funny!
ReplyDeleteFor the past few years I've had an reoccurring appointment on my Outlook calendar. It's titled WALK. I don't dismiss it until I do some exercise.
it works both ways! what a fun challenge and a great reward and example to KC of better health....
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like they have found the perfect way to keep you on track with your exercise.
ReplyDeleteGood for you, you have a wonderful family!!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Art. Pretty funny. I was thinking I'd just put stickers on a calendar. Then I thought I couldn't do that to a seven year old. The sly dogs.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great plan. You were so clever to do that for your granddaughter and now she can reciprocate. And who better to stay healthy for than KC. You are going to want to go to her graduations on your own two feet, and one day you will want to walk down the aisle before she gets married. Get that chart, get those stickers, and get to walking. You have such great weather to walk in.
ReplyDeleteThis is so perfect! What goes around, comes around. Nothing is ever lost, or (it seems) ever forgotten! :-)
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good plan and New Year's resolution too. Good luck!! Dianne
ReplyDeleteHow can you challenge your own plan?? I do believe they have you. We should all have someone holding our feet to the fire. Way to go KC.
ReplyDeletegood thing the system worked for her, I hear a few stories of children who go through a rough time getting potty trained
ReplyDeleteOh gosh. Perfect! ♥
ReplyDeleteHope this works!
ReplyDeleteYeah, Kay, WE wanna see your chart, too!
ReplyDeleteEven though you've got usually wonderful climate, try the DVDs by Leslie Sansone, Walk at Home series: www.walkathome.com. You run out of all the usual excuses. The one for diabetics is "Walking Down Your Blood Sugar" and good for anyone. I also saw them at the regional furniture store, Nebraska Furniture Mart, when I bought a hybrid bike/walker, but I'd already ordered them from her website. They are good and encouraging without being dumb. 15 minutes is equal to a mile, and marked such on the DVD. They might be at Wal-Marts.
I like the Shake Weight DVD for upper body stuff and strengthening; just be careful with your shoulder history. It's actually made my tendons gradually stronger in a safe manner.
Hopefully you've seen the photos of osteoporosis: looks like scaffolding put up for construction sites, but with many pieces missing. Many of my patients couldn't understand why they "suddenly fell." For many of those older folks with osteoporosis, the hip/thigh bones actually break FIRST, THEN the person falls. Recovery is very difficult.
Move those bones, Kay! You've got miles to go, places to see, and things to do! Aloha, DrumMajor
Siiigh... OK....
DeleteThe bone breaks before the fall?? Wow, who knew.
DeleteScary, isn't it?
DeleteIf you get the time check out Michelle's 'Nature Notes' (link on my blog). Best series of photos and videos on caterpillar/butterfly story. KC would enjoy. And the Caterpillar is adorable. Dianne
ReplyDeleteI'm laughing too. Perfect indeed. All you need to do is walk in the sunshine on non-Zumba days. It really works. Keep us posted please. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy new year to all of you.
I'm sure KC thinks it's a great idea. She will likely send you a chart and stickers. Just you wait and see.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
Luv, K & D & Lindy
As they say, what goes around comes around!
ReplyDeleteI have a chart, not nearly as cute as yours, no stickers, but it works. I've used it off and on for many years now. I'm back on to charting my exercise.
ReplyDeleteI hope KC follows through. I want to see your chart too.
I love the idea of you being accountable to your grand-daughter and I'm sure it will work.
ReplyDeleteGood for you, Kay! It's up to our kids to look after us at some point!
ReplyDeleteI cutting back for a month to try to begin a weight loss. I've lost 2kg so far.
I've found a site where you can hold yourself accountable. Plug in weight & exercise every day. It's great!
Cheers from Cottage Country Ontario , ON, Canada!
