I have the worst time seeing the teeny tiny expiration dates on cans and boxes of grocery items. I know that the dates aren't always accurate and that a lot of food do last much longer. However, I had spices that expired in 2008. That's got to be too old, right?
When I was in Illinois my daughter showed me how she labeled everything in her pantry, cupboards and refrigerator with Post-it tapes.
It's a paper tape so you can easily write on it.
When we got back to Hawaii I saw it at the store and decided to buy it.
I labeled all our spices so I can clearly see the expiration date. I labeled a few canned goods too. Hmmm.... maybe I should look in the fridge tomorrow and see what else I can label.

You could do the same for medicines whose dates are so hard to make out.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know such Post-it tape exists. Looks a lot better than the masking tape I use for kitchen things.
I'm sure masking tape actually does the same job. The only reason I like these is because of the bright, eye catching color. :-)

ReplyDeleteI learn something new every day. i buy my spices mostly in small batches from the self-serve bins at the health food store so I will have fresh. Otherwise I would keep them around far past their time.
ReplyDeleteI wish we had a spice shop close by. Then again, since mom does most of the cooking, it wouldn't be worth it for me.

DeleteI didn't know it exists, either! What a great idea, Kay, although I hardly ever pay any attention to expiration dates and buy my spices in the bulk bin. I suppose somewhere they have the expiration dates, but I buy them for each cooking occasion anyway.

You're efficient. I just went through all of my spices this past summer and threw out some very old jars....1980s even.
Although, I do have my spices in alphabetical order on 6 in-cabinet turntables so my short body can reach for any single one of them. My yard/garage tools are also in alphabetical order on the garage wall. It's a running joke in my family......

Yes, it does stick on things in the fridge and freezer. It's pretty nifty and comes in different colors. I could write it directly on the Ziplock bags, but the tape stands out more.

Uh, oh. I first started this as a way to use the top corner cabinets or the high middle shelf where I'd have to climb a step stool to even look at what was at the back. Two of the circular turntables are actually half hidden into a back corner, so it's still storing the spices, but I just spin it to bring forward the one I want. I marked the outer edge of the turntable with the letters of items on that turntable, like A to F. A new container of a spice just gets stored toward the center, right behind the current one.
DeleteI haven't purchased those turntables with the vertical braces that hold another turntable. Those limit the height on the bottom turntable, and the top one is usually too close to the shelf above it. Found easy-spinning, thin ones at Ace Hardware, but they're about $9 each. Now my son uses them.
Is Art going to put his tools in alpha order, too?
When I was young and single, I was constantly teased about being over-organized, to the point that my friends wondered if I dated guys "in alphabetical" order. (Nope.)

Good idea. I threw out a bunch of spices when I moved into this house and bought all new spices (expensive). Now that I am retired I use spices more and do not usually have to throw them out.

ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful. Yes, my spices are beyond ancient....faded to nothing would be a good phrase. They experts say to throw them away after six months. I won't tell you how old mine are.

ReplyDeleteI had a couple of those labeling machines and labeled everything with it. In fact, I have (had, since it broke last year) a sifter with my maiden name plastic labeled on it. Art and I have been married 40 years so that label lasted a LONG time.

It was wonderful meeting you for the first time, David. It was a huge surprise that you actually recognized us! We bought those labels at the NEX, but I imagine they must be at places like Office Depot or Max and Longs. I think. I haven't looked for them there yet. Walmart? Target?
