Darn! Kathy, my nurse practitioner called to tell me that my bone density showed osteoporosis. I've been off of Fosamax for almost three years now, but I'd held steady at osteopenia which is the step before osteoporosis. I confess I've not done as much walking as I should be doing. My problem is that I'm not very heavy so my bones need more weight bearing exercises.
Kathy suggested I take some Vitamin D because my levels were a little low and to up my calcium dosage.
She also said I need to.... you know... get out there and do more walking.
I've taken out my old leg weights and will try walking around the house with them. I'm also thinking of wearing a weighted vest, but I need to find a comfortable one. Have any of you tried wearing one?
I'll also need to be careful because the last time I got too gung ho with weights, I hurt myself. Art and my kids keepnagging lovingly encouraging me to do more exercises.
I'm putting it on my list of New Year resolutions.... again.

Well, drats! But at least NP Kathy is catching it. My doc does a yearly blood test, and I've taken extra D for years; Sam's/Costco have it cheap; check for the I.U. (International Units) strength. My bone density has been above normal, so far. Check with Kathy about the weight vest, as you may need to build up leg / ankle strength in muscle and bone first.
ReplyDeleteThe ankle weights look lovely, and even match Art's compression device for his legs.
DrumMajor
The weights aren't all that bad either, but Art keeps telling me not to go overboard again and overdo it.
DeleteI have osteopenia and waiting for my dexiscan tests this next week. I also am low in Vitamin D. I think weights on your legs are a great idea, but don't trip and fall!
ReplyDeleteoh Kay I'm so sorry to hear this but I know you will do everything you can to fix it or at least put a halt to this , did i ever wear a weighted vest or ankle weights? No Kay, I have a fat backside this is all the weight I need, lol, it does need to go though!I wish you luck with your problem and you can wish me luck with mine, I wish I could send you a little of my extra weight , lol!!
ReplyDeleteI first remembering hearing about osteoporosis during the Drink Milk campaigns
ReplyDeleteI don't know but for some reason it seems to me that you are in constant motion. Why would you need more exercise?
ReplyDeleteI'm not quite in as much motion as I should be. Darn.
DeleteThe osteoporosis is not good news but it sounds like your nurse practitioner is on top of things and will help you do everything possible to keep is in check. Good luck in you efforts to exercise more.
ReplyDeleteDarn is right! I have osteopenia, too. When it was diagnosed several years ago I was diligent about doing weight-bearing exercise. Now, not so much. I guess I should get back on it.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry about your diagnosis and know you will do what you can to keep it at bay. Sadly osteoporosis attacks the slender the worst.
ReplyDeleteOne good thing about my being over weight as opposed to being a nice trim person like you is that every time I get to my feet, it is a serious weight bearing exercise.
You can beat this. Keep up the good work.
So maybe I should have some of those Christmas cookies and sweets. :-) But then there's the pre-diabetes. Sheesh!
DeleteWeighted vest sound bad for your back…Try working out with weights with a DVD or early morning show on PBS. Also, your local hospital might have s class or two.
ReplyDeleteI have osteopenia and I take calcium and D every day. I just got the diagnosis again so I guess I need to up the exercise too.
ReplyDeleteI take the calcium and Vit D tablets too for osteoporosis. But I think the best thing has been getting a dog; I walk her every day for about 40 minutes which should help a lot. Hope you manage to find some way of exercising that' s fun.
ReplyDeleteMy son is threatening me to exercise or he'd get me a dog.
DeleteA dog!!! Now that's an idea! Holly
Deletenow I have something to be thankful for-not needed a weighted vest...lol!
ReplyDeleteThe meds today are also very good.
ReplyDeleteI had to get off Fosamax because I'd been taking it for too long a time and the side effects could hurt me.
DeleteI think it would be best if you skip the weight vest and just start walking, Kay. You don't want to hurt yourself and then not be able to exercise at all. Osteoporosis is quite common is small women like you with a family history. Fortunately for me, nobody is really small and nobody has developed it... so far. :-)
ReplyDeleteI just read on line about weights and it looks like I should stick to the leg weights and only 3 times a week with rests in between. Sounds do-able. Sigh... it's true that genetics is against me. I thought I'd get enough D in Hawaii from the sun, but Art just read on line that older people cannot absorb D from sunlight as easily. So nature is against me too.
DeleteJoin me at the gym. :) You can walk in comfort at the gym or overcompensate outside in the heat. LOL
ReplyDeleteLike Lin said, I don't have the problem of not being heavy enough! It's for weight management that I walk so much, that and keeping arthritis at bay.
ReplyDeleteMaybe what you need is a walking partner. Is there someone in your Zumba class or that other exercise you do that you could connect with?
One problem I don't have.... Be careful that you don't stress your ankles...... Michelle
ReplyDeleteThis is something I need to get checked out again. And exercise is something I need to step up.
ReplyDeleteGosh, we do need to stand and walk more! I was Vit D deficient, many are. Do supplement.

Hope weight bearing exercises help!
ReplyDeleteYou live in an ideal place to walk year around, and I am just a little bit envious up here in snowy, slippery Minnesota. I hope you will find some places that you really love to walk. I find that makes all the difference in my motivation.
ReplyDeleteYou take care! I did walkies in the bog today. I needed snowshoes! That'd give you some exercise!!!
ReplyDeleteCheers from Cottage Country Ontario , ON, Canada!
Wow, Kay, we really are alike!
ReplyDeleteI just had a physical and all was okay except my vitamin D level (which I think should be around 50) is at 22!!
No wonder I am moving like a Zombie! Very hard to get out in and walk with all the rain we are having, I always knew it was important for my health, I was right!
No need for me to have weights on my body, my excess pounds are sufficient!
