Hawaiian Style St. Patrick's Day

When we lived in Chicago, St. Patrick's Day was quite a big thing.  There's a lot of Irish in Chicago.  They even dye the Chicago River green.  It's not quite the same in Hawaii but we like to celebrate it remembering all our Irish friends in Chicago and especially to celebrate my sister-in-law, Nancy and our nephews.


This year was no different.  We had the traditional Irish American repast of corned beef and cabbage.  However, we also added cucumber namasu, kinpira gobo, Okinawan purple sweet potatoes, a huge green salad, kabocha and my cousin brought Liliha Bakery's famous coco puffs. 

Nancy made a mint chocolate ice cream cake that everybody loved.  Notice the chocolate shamrock?

And yes, there was Guinness beer and it was very good.  Mom finished her bottle without a problem at all.

Did you notice she's wearing green too?  So is Art, but he's taking the photo.

    I wore green, too, but in exercise class, almost everybody was wearing green! I didn't drink any green beer, though, or even Guinness. I'm still trying to lose those extra pounds I gained in Turkey. :-)

    That was write a spread in addition to the traditional Irish corned beef and cabbage. I look forward to this holiday also because cabbage is always so cheap and I can count on making many of our favorite cabbage dishes. But to the Irish, it must be a day of national pride and heritage. And luck!!!

      I cooked too much cabbage. I have a ton left. Everybody loved the carrots though. My favorite is Cook's corned beef. It's so hard to find here.

      I still can't get over your sewing machine deal. Wow!

      Lol...I'm still basking in the LUCK I had yesterday...and I wasn't wearing any green either. Furthermore, i just received an email that the sewing machine will arrive tomorrow UPS second day air, when I only chose the free shipping option. Too bad I will not be home during the scheduled delivery time, so I will have to wait til Friday to finally have a sewing machine again. I can't believe the timing of the "Today's Deal", nor that I hardly ever check this tab at the Amazon site. Only because I have the Brother sewing machine page bookmarked and have gone to the site periodically including yesterday morning, did I happen to see the price drop. Then upon checkout I saw that I could save first $70, then another $40 if I applied for their credit products. I was surprised the approval was instant and their $110 gift card was applied to the sewing machine purchase, usually these kinds of "gifts" from credit card applications are a bit more complicated and lengthy. Also not knowing anything about Costco's new relationship with Citi VISA, figured the Amazon VISA would get me at least 2 percent at Costco gas and drugstores like Longs. So that was the deal breaker in my decision to go forward with applying for the Amazon card. Plus these days of low savings interest and with the Feds probably keeping rates low for a bit longer, banking perks on the credit side is what I have to look into when offered.

    I love to see your expansions of the holidays. I might even have a drop of Irish blood way back, but that doesn't convince me to eat corned beef. I am on an alcohol fast, so green beer wasn't on the table either. I had a fried egg. Maybe it was from an Irish hen?

    I'm going to have to learn how to cook kabocha. Our mom used to love it (the rest of us --- blech), but I do know quite a few people who enjoy eating that, so I SHOULD learn how to prepare it.

    Yum... Your St. Patrick's Day Dinner sounds wonderful. That ice cream cake makes me hungry!!! Looks delicious..

    Well, I'm impressed! We have never actually celebrated St. Patrick's Day, aside from being sure to wear green for all those years we were in school or teaching school.
    Tom recently had his DNA tested and discovered that while he is 74% Scandinavian, he is also 16% Irish. Those Vikings and Celts crossed paths. So we sort of celebrated this year, as you saw from my last post.

      You are not going to believe this! I just had Art do that Ancestry.com thing because I saw it on Adam's blog. It will probably be 100% Asia, but it would be fun to know for sure.

      Oh how I miss cooking a chunk of corned beef. Why can't they sell it here in Israel.
