Lunch Buffet at the Oceanarium

Our tour group to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand last year was filled with wonderful people.  Because there were so many people, we were broken up into Groups 1 and 2.  We belonged to the larger Group 1.  However we met several of the people in the smaller Group 2 and found we really enjoyed each others' company.

When we returned to Hawaii last spring they invited us to their get-together which we really enjoyed.  Ron, Mary Ann and Caroline organized this year's get-together at the Oceanarium in Waikiki on Sunday and invited us once more.

It was fabulous seeing everybody again.  Art had always wanted to try the buffet at the Oceanarium, but we've never had the chance.

The big draw at the Oceanarium is the snow crab legs and deservedly so. Yum!

There were also a lot of seafood items which we really enjoyed and the selections were varied and delicious.  We didn't overeat, but we weren't hungry for dinner later either.

Art was in charge of taking photos for this post, but as you can see we don't have many photos.  We were too busy eating and chatting.

Do you see that diver in the tank wishing people a happy anniversary or birthday?  Wouldn't this be a great place to do a proposal?

(I've blurred out photos of people who are not familiar with blogs and could not give informed consent.)

Ron, Mary Ann and Caroline were such wonderful hosts, taking care of the bill and making sure everybody was having a great time.

And yes indeed, we were loving every minute, including (especially) the desserts!  Tour friends, Nora and Phyllis told me that if I drank a lot of water after the dessert, I could dilute the glucose in my blood.  I should try this before my next blood test.

Everyone commented that we hoped we could be on another trip together again someday.  Who knows?  It's possible!

OK... I going to go and drink more water now.

POSTSCRIPT:  I was talking to my cousins, Arnold and Walter tonight.  Alas, they have burst my bubble.  They said drinking water to reduce my glucose will not work.  In order to reduce the glucose, I need to exercise.  And according to Arnold, I need to sweat. Shucks!

  1. I looked at my glucose readings sent from my doctor's office and they are amazingly consistent year to year, running right around 90. I think anything under 100 is considered normal. Am I right? And yes, that would be a fun place to ask someone to get married (if she said yes, that is). :-)

  2. Does look like a fun day and delicious food -- even if it does mean needing to exercise to reduce the glucose and exercise more!! Hope your week is going well, Kay!! Enjoy -- and I know you do!!

  3. Don't you just hate the word "sweat" when people tell you to exercise. I can do that when I'm working in the yard, but to go to the gym and workout...I just can't do it. Loved your notes on the friends in the picture. Seafood is the best. You must have had a great time.

  4. You are so funny. Yes, I get in the pool and sweat every morning. I'd rather not but do.
    What a fun day.

  7. Kay, keep drinking that water :)
Really, keep drinking. As we age, our bodies lose the ability to 'feel' when we are out of our comfort zones; so that's why you see old ladies wearing sweaters all the time... in many cases, they just don't know when they are cold or hot so they wear extra clothes out of habit. Same with hydration, you just aren't aware you are dehydrated as you get older... so I've developed the habit of just tanking a huge amount of water when I get up in the morning, something close to a liter just to be on the safe side. If you don't need it, your body will just excrete it. Although sweating it off would be great... and you can be thankful you sweat easily; the poorer your general circulation (more out of shape you become), the more difficult it is for people, especially women, to sweat. So if you do it regularly, you should be celebrating the sweat stains on your clothes and not begrudging them! My mom would be outside working in her garden everyday... never complained of any sweat and I never saw an antiperspirant or deodorant, ever, in her bathroom.

    1. I didn't drink water very often when I lived in Illinois. I liked my liquids flavored. I am older and wiser now and I do keep water with me throughout the day. Still, I do forget to drink even then because I'm distracted. I stay away from antiperspirant ever since my son's science teacher said it wasn't good for us. I stick with deodorant.

I do make sure I take fluids before Zumba. One of the ladies did collapse from dehydration recently. And a couple of years ago, someone actually fainted on the way home from tai chi. She was dehydrated. Incredible.

    2. Always monitor the color of your urine; this is a very good indicator of how dehydrated your body is. In fact, in some training areas (advanced marksmanship, survival etc type courses) they have a color scale next to the urinal so you can compare your urine to the chart and get an idea of how much water you need.

  8. That gives new meaning to " eating with the fishes". Wow, they picked up the tab for that group? How nice that the friends you made traveling, remained friends.

    1. No, they didn't pick up the tab for everyone. They organized the collection and payment, not to mention getting consensus of which restaurant to go to. They also acted as hosts constantly checking to see that everybody got what they needed.

  12. Nice that you have those get togethers. I am doing hot yoga/Bikram yoga and I sweat enough for three people. But if you are going to seat, you do need to be drink plenty of water, so don't give that up.

  15. You're more active than most people....and you are looking younger. Not much more you can do except watch your carbs. So hard....today I am starting a daily food journal, documenting everything I eat and drink. I eat so simply, that it is difficult for me to evaluate whether I am eating properly. I don't plan meals either. I also want to count carbs, improve my nutrient intake and lower our food expense mainly by not overeating.

    1. I had to keep a food log for my pre-diabetic counselor. I have to limit my saimin, tempura and sushi. Ummm... as for looking younger.... I always tell people to back up when they take my photo and don't use the close up. :-)
