The ʻIolani Palace was the royal residence of the rulers of the Kingdom of Hawaii beginning with Kamehameha III under the Kamehameha Dynasty (1845) and ending with Queen Lili'uokalani (1893) under the Kalākaua Dynasty, founded by her brother, King David Kalakaua.We have visited the palace many times and found it interesting to see how the Hawaiian royalty lived. It wasn't all that ostentatious, but comfortable and showed a lot of western (European) influence. The Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the United States. It was fascinating to hear that King Kalakaua installed electricity and telephones before the White House or Buckingham Palace is 1882. He was very much into the latest modern technologies.

ReplyDeleteHawaii had many different influences...not many of them good influences.
ReplyDeleteYears ago I read a book, "The Kings and Queens of Old Hawaii" by .... hmmm, I forget the author. It was very well written, and also made me very sad. The monarchy seemed doomed. They didn't produce offspring, or if they did, it would be tragic. The most promising (to me) was the beautiful beautiful Princess Ka'iulani.

we went by there when visiting hawaii years ago but didn't go inside, so i'll try the video tour.

ReplyDeleteI would enjoy visiting there. I have some familiarity with Hawaii's history. I can appreciate my SIL's pride in Hawaiian heritage and her artistic efforts to help preserve others valuing the culture.
