Expandable (Expendable?) Hoses

Ever since mom fell backwards and hit her head and then forwards and hit her cheek, it's taken quite a bit of time to recuperate and she continues to suffer some pain though it is slowly getting better.

At first we told her not to go out and we took over all the cooking. It was difficult for her and making her stir crazy. So we're now having her cook a few stir try veggies and not stopping her from going out of the house to rake leaves every day.

What she's missing is watering her plants every morning. She used to like carrying a bucket and giving each plant a splash of water. The hose is too cumbersome for her.

Well....
July 11th was Amazon's Prime Day and we found one of those flexible hoses.

There were 830 customer reviews and it got 4 stars. It also had a 12 month warranty. We thought this might be the solution for mom. It's supposed to be light and kink free.

We ordered it.

Then Art saw this at Ross for $9.99. It's 25 feet and was supposed to also be good. It's a Sharper Image product.

When we got home, Art looked online and what he saw was not good. It said the Sharper Image hose did not reach 25 feet because it wouldn't uncoil properly. It was more like 10 feet. And it leaked.

We returned it.

When we got home again and was talking to our neighbor, she said they tried two brands of the kind of flexible hose that we ordered on Amazon and both leaked within the month.

Back online, Art checked Consumer Reports and other websites. They warned that the flexible hoses all leak pretty quickly and that warranties are not honored.

Sigh...

Too late.

  1. I use one of those flexible hoses, and yes it leaks a little bit, but it still works well otherwise. I like it because it's lightweight and I can use it on my front porch to water my plants. I hope you find the right one for Mom. :-)

  3. I bought a lightweight hose some years ago from a company called Gardeners Supply Company, online. It is very lightweight, very sturdy, doesn't tangle, in short, I have never had such an easy to use hose. They have several different versions of it, including one that is coiled! I'll bet your mom would love one of them also. I will attach a link to one of the lightweight hoses, or just check out the company online. http://www.gardeners.com/buy/lightweight-garden-hose/37-922VS.html#q=hose&simplesearch=submit&start=1

  4. Oh, I just did a search on Amazon for featherweight garden hose and they carry them also, from Gardeners Supply Company. You can read reviews there to see what others thought of these hoses!

  5. I just got a flex hose last month and love it. Spray isn't as much because the hose diameter is less, but I still love it. Hope Mom does too!

  6. Don't ALL hoses leak? And kink? Or Am I just bad at hoses?

  8. I got one of the original ones and remember I wasn't impressed. It didn't recoil. Maybe they are better now but it doesn't sound like it from your experience. Good luck.

  9. I have that coiled plastic one - I don't like it because it gets stuck on my steps and almost pulls me back. Junk - that's my take on it, but it doesn't take up that much space so I continue to have it on the side watering site.

My 80 year old girlfriend has those expandable hoses - got them from Lowes or Home Depot as a 2 pack. She was looking for them and said they had to have metal connectors (which it did). She loves them because they are light weight. Hope the ones you order work out for you!

  13. Hoses! Our conventional hose drives me crazy, it being so hard to wind up. There's no victory here. lol
