Our nephew, Cody texted us that he was out at a Kaneohe Hawaiian fish pond and had caught a couple of fish. He wanted to know if we would like to have one.
Fresh fish?
"Sure." I texted back.
Then he texted that it was a barracuda.
Barracuda? Can you eat a barracuda?
Aren't they the fish that's really scary with big teeth like a piranha?
When Cody arrived, he asked for a big cookie sheet so he could lay the fish on it.
Really? That big?
Sorry to say, I forgot to take a photo of the barracuda before mom cut off its head and tail.
You'll have to take my word for it that it took up the entire cookie sheet and it was definitely a big fish.
Mom cooked it right away. She salted and peppered, floured and fried it with pieces of garlic in oil.
Cody couldn't stay for dinner because he had to leave to go to work.
I grated some ginger root, added shoyu (soy sauce) and drizzled it over the fish.
You know what?
It wasn't fishy tasting at all. Well, it was a fish, but wasn't fishy. Ah well... I hope you know what I mean.
Cody says fresh fish doesn't taste fishy.
It was gooooood....
I mean really, really good.
Cody says he'll bring us more fish next time he goes fishing.
And if Cody says it's a piranha, I think we'd still give it a try.
We do have the best nephews ever!

Sounds and looks really good! Great photo of your mom! We cook fish right from the lake on shore and it never smells or tastes fishy, so I think that saying is true! If it sits around it smells though, we can’t leave anything sit around, bears can smell it for miles away, I prefer not sharing with the bears!

I like fish if it's fresh but I have never had one of those.

ReplyDeleteI imagine most fish are edible. Didn't really give it much thought. Our only experience with barracuda was in Virgin Islands snorkeling in the 80s. It's a scary fish with all those teeth.
ReplyDeleteYou do have a great nephew there, and a great mother, too, who cooked it. (Who cleaned it?)They always say fresh fish should only smell and taste of the sea, but living far from the ocean, I don't eat as much fresh fish as I should.
ReplyDeleteMy Dad - a native Key West'er and fisherman-- always said not to eat one over three feet long. The big ones carry a toxin that the effects can for last years. Hope he was not over three feet. Your Mom always amazes me.

You so lucky! Can't beat fresh fish, especially as sashimi. Our friend made sashimi for us from fresh barracuda and it was the best I ever had. Slightly crunchy, non fishy taste. Yum!

ReplyDeleteI didn't know you could eat barracuda. The son and I went deep sea fishing near Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and we first caught bonito, which was the bait fish, then caught a nice 3 to 4 foot barracuda. Since we didn't catch any trophy fish, we had the two mounted. Somebody got my money, but more fun than Kansas fishing! Linda in Kansas
