Checking Google Maps Before Venturing Out

It was time to go grocery shopping after staying home for 6 weeks. We'd done fine with all our preparatory stocking up before locking down and especially with friends and relatives stopping by with additional supplies.

However, we couldn't go on like this for a year. We needed to stock up once more. Besides, Hawaii's number of infections had flattened and now the governor was calling for a gradual easing of restrictions. You know the infection numbers will rise again so this had to be the time to run out again.

I asked a lot of friends what the best time would be. They all told me that dinner time appeared to be best. There are Kupuna (senior/handicapped) Hours but Oahu has a LOT of seniors so it's not necessarily the best time.

Someone had mentioned to Art that he could use Google Maps to show you what the traffic was like in certain areas.

You first type in where you'd like to go.

Then scroll up.

The blue shows you the typical times. The red is what it's like when you're checking the people traffic.

It doesn't seem to show you the Kupuna hour traffic though.

Still... this was very helpful.

  1. I'm surprised you've lasted that long. We go through milk and lettuce so fast, also eggs. we have a pick up at Giant tomorrow morning. I must add a few more things to the list.

  3. We are still being big chickens and letting others shop for us when our scheduled pickup times leave us wanting for a few days. Today, someone is going to Costco and will grab a few items for us.

  4. I'm like Christine, I go once a week (and just went yesterday around 11am, it was pretty empty inside). We have toilet paper now, and SOME cleaning supplies, but still mostly empty shelves and zero paper towels. Anyway, hope you guys loaded up on your eggs & stuff Kay :)

  5. We've been doing once a week. It's not bad. But we're near small towns.

  6. Here in tiny town, I am a weekly shopper. Usually go the 6 AM senior hour once a week. That chart however is a great idea for a large area.

  7. An associate at Costco told my husband that the senior hour is the WORST time to go :-)

  8. Hadn't noticed the red bar in the graphs before. Yep, I'm sure every hour is kapuna hour in Hawaii. One article said the most dangerous place is at check-out because of the closer proximity. Have fun! Linda in Kansas

  10. I never realized until recently that those suggestions were based on real time.

  11. Google maps let me down dreadfully today. It did not know the freeway project to my dentist is finished. Fortunately, my sister knew.

  12. My hubby does most of our grocery shopping. I still go once or twice a week to the coffee shop for a to-go latte. Otherwise, I drink my French Press coffee here at home. He goes once a week, usually to the Community Food Co-op during senior hours. :-)

  13. This is a "What ever next" app. It seems that there's not much that isn't made.

  14. You're right, Kay. This was very helpful. I like Google maps, especially the street view option where you can see actual buildings and such.
