Hawaii has been grappling with the problem of tourism in Hawaii during this time of pandemic. On the one hand, Hawaii is extremely dependent on tourism for its economy. On the other hand, tourism and off island travel brought COVID-19 to our state.
With strict measures in hand by our governor and mayors, our infection numbers have come down. The few times we've gone out, we see local people and businesses willing to comply with the social distance and masking rules.
However, we're still seeing a number of tourists coming in despite the 14 day quarantine rules.
It boggles my mind that people would want to travel here knowing they must be quarantined for 14 days.
Well... now we know.
It's because most of those tourists aren't following the rules and are risking the $5,000 fine/1 year in jail possibility.
In fact several have actually posted themselves on Facebook and other sites bragging how they're breaking the rules.
We're also getting people coming here with plans to join our already over populated homeless areas.
It's a difficult situation.
And this really puts it in perspective for me.
Why oh why can't these people think about others instead of just themselves?

ReplyDeleteEvery thing we wear is for other people. We wear bras so people won't be disgusted by our "grotesque" hanging breasts, deodorant so people will not gag from the smell of our armpits, and CLOTHES so people will not be forced to look at our naked bodies. We can wear a fucking mask.
He is a poor example of everything. I thought the young Bush was our worst president ever but Trump had trumped him big tome!!
ReplyDeleteI think people are following the lead of those who are trying to divide the country even more and bring the country down. And they are succeeding in ways I never expected would work. I am dismayed and terrified.

ReplyDeleteI applaud the author of the letter to the editor. Have we really become so very entitled that we cannot think about the welfare of others. Some people are giving up so much but others can't delay a vacation or even put on a mask? It all makes me so sad.
ReplyDeleteThis is infuriating, I very much hope the Hawaiian government is able to crack down on these people thumbing their noses at the law. It just shocks me how people think "big government" is in their way of life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness. It's not bravery, it's ignorance.

ReplyDeleteThey really have the nerve to brag on social media how they are beating the system??? Mind boggling. Our leader has made wearing a mask optional. That filters down to thumbing a nose at all the CDC recommendations.
ReplyDeleteWe have a name for these people, covidiots. They used to just be citots, here in cottage country. Now they have gone over the line. I'm so sorry. It really is shameful. We have our fair share of covitiots who claim doctors are lying, it's all fake, but why would they be wearing such awful PPE all day.

ReplyDeleteI wear a mask all the time when I am out there in the world. Was a security guard really killed over the issue of wearing a mask? This is truly ugly.
ReplyDeleteJust watching the national news yesterday told me all I need to know: the president was maskless,hoards of people crowded onto beaches and into water parks, and apparently you can only pray inside of a church where lots of people are there to appreciate your piety.

ReplyDeleteAlthough some of the restrictions in the UK have been eased we are still finding many are not social distancing and for example have had overcrowded beaches etc. These are certainly not easy times.

I agree with the lady who wrote to the newspaper. Just wear a mask. For Pete's sake, it's not like an alien has asked you to graft alien skin onto yourself or something, it's just a mask! (Sorry, have I seen too many alien movies?)
ReplyDeleteI reached the check out station, many X's back, and realized my mask was in the car, just outside the door. I put my ice cream on a shelf, ran out and back and moved up the several spaces that the nice people behind reserved for me. Bought my ice cream, and wore me mask all the way home.

ReplyDeleteGlad to see Hawaii defending itself, in general. Depending on who gets wiped off the planet for not following the instructions, the Hawaiians may be able to re-populate the earth! Just "imagine all the people, living in peace," with SO much ALOHA and kindness to share.
