Not Watching Where I Step

Since I can't go to Zumba any more or Tai-Chi, Art and I have been walking outside before the sun comes up.

Art has a tendency to look down because you know he's looking for coins to add to his charity jar.

I'm always looking up to see if there's something of interest for my blog or to text to our kids in Illinois and Maryland.

While we were walking one morning, Art suddenly jerked me away which startled me. I looked at him questioningly and he pointed down.

It was a centipede about 5 inches long. I've never seen one on the road before. I did see one in the garden when we uprooted a bush during our home renovation.

I saw centipedes more often when we were growing up in a plantation village. Kids were always told to leave them alone because they can bite, but I've never heard of anyone bitten.

Still... I sure don't want to the be the first.

Maybe I'll look down more often from now on.

  9. I had a U of H professor friend role over on one in his bed and it was excrutiating. I also remember seeing them in traps when stayed at Sea Life part. They are really terrifying.

  12. Yikes. That is four and a half inches too long. I am sure he is handsome to another centipede but to me that is a truly ugly critter. Glad you missed stepping on him. Good job Art.

  13. Yuck! They are so evil looking they always give me the creeps. I got bitten by one while living in Palolo. It was between the sheets. So creepy. Just like a monster.

  15. I'm not sure about this guy's bite but I'll bet it would tickle if he walked over your foot with all those legs.

  16. Have never encountered a centipede, but a scorpion got me in bed one night — no fun.

  17. Eewwww. What do they feed on? Where are their family members? I'd read about putting your bed post legs in little cups of water to keep them from crawling to a bed. Not sure a gallon jug would keep that bug from going where it wants! Yikes! Boring bugs live in Kansas, Linda

    1. I was never worried about centipedes in my bed until I read these comments. However, I am being bitten a LOT recently by something and it itches like crazy. We don’t know what is causing it.
