Final Thoughts About Our Viking Ocean Cruise

We had a super time on the Viking cruise and it was especially wonderful because we journeyed with good friends. We are all happy we went on the cruise. There were lots of glitches, but we all watched each other's backs and were there to help if something went wrong. If someone forgot or needed something, a friend was always there to lend what they had. It really made all the difference.

But.... I do have other thoughts about this.

* Viking made the flight arrangements, but we suspect they pick the cheapest flights and seats and you have to pay to upgrade. Granted, this could all be due to the COVID situation. But that flight thing was AWFUL!  (We've since learned that it's cheaper to get the flights through a travel agent or on your own.)

* It's all (OK, maybe I’m exaggerating) about the food and we did enjoy the decadent amount of variety available for us to enjoy at every meal.

* The Included Tours are pretty much just a bus trip to give you a general look at the towns. Paid tours are better, but both Included Tours and Paid Tours had knowledgeable tour guides.

* All the servers and stewards onboard ship are unfailingly kind, cheerful and accommodating. I'm always amazed at how happy and friendly they all are. It does make the trip that much more enjoyable.

* We loved all the entertainment. The performers on the Viking Star were super talented. (The above photo was called The Beatles Songbook.)

And the lecturers were quite interesting.

* Two weeks for a cruise is enough. (These ship photos are for Mage of Postcards.) We met someone doing a World tour that started in December. I think she said she'd been on the ship with her husband for 5 months. The cost is astronomical.

* There are all kinds of facilities available for you to enjoy to get your exercise, ie. pools, saunas, a gym, etc. Our Travel Buddies did enjoy them, but I was busy trying to get some sleep and writing in my journal so I could do my blog for you. 😁 That's my excuse and I stand by it.

* Viking is not a Disney Cruise. No children or gambling. I love children, but this was quite relaxing and catered to senior interests.

* When we were younger, Art preferred doing his own travel arrangements and having us explore places on our own. (Actually, I think he still does.) I'm sorry, but I did LOVE not worrying about where to eat, where to go, how to go, etc. and having those things planned for you instead. Still, even with Viking, you have to be on your toes.

* HOWEVER, I also have to add that cruises are not the same as land tours. If you want to see and truly experience a country, you really have to do land tours. When we were younger, we traveled everywhere on our own. Now that we are older, I (me, not Art) feels safer with a tour and knowledgeable guide.

But all in all... in my final thoughts, I'm pretty sure what made it most fun and the reason why the Travel Buddies enjoyed it so much is that we were sharing the adventure together.

And yes, we're considering England next... sometime in the future.

This is so weird. My scale must be broken. I actually lost 5 pounds. How is that possible?

  1. I'm glad that worked out for you. Big ship cruises have never appealed to us. I'd like to do another river cruise one day though Dan is not as gung ho about that. We also hope to use unTours again. Ireland was on our list and in 2024 we are hoping to take the family to Switzerland using unTours. But Covid and plane travel and the mess at airports is keeping us closer at home for now.

  2. I really couldn't do one, but happy for you. This is good advice.

  3. Lin says LOL I lost 10 pounds but had to have a molar tooth pulled. Loved your description of your cruise. I've been on one but wouldn't go again because of the crowds...

  4. England will be lovely! There's the Queen and the high tea and the pubs. I was there in 1969. Has it changed much? Gigi hawaii

  5. I think there are way more pluses than minuses with the cruise. I know I have really enjoyed going along with you vicariously. Plus it didn't cost me a penny:)
Amazing on the weight loss. Even on short ones I have gained.

  6. I am with you about tours. It is nice to not have to think and plan. Losing 5 pounds is a wonder on a cruise. You must have walked it off touring the towns. I'm glad you had a good time and great travel buddies.

  7. Thank you for this summary. I had hoped that with all the glitches, it was still a good experience. The only Viking cruises we have done are on River Boats and they were wonderful. I was not as enamored with their food as you were. The evening meals left us hungry. But the included tours were great and much more on land.
But yes, doing your own land tours is the best. Would that we still could.

    1. We did the Viking European River Cruise in 2018 and I have to say the ground tours were much better and we got to know more people because it was a smaller boat.

  8. I really appreciate the ship photographs. :) And this final post also. I believe we won't be taking any Viking cruises. Darn it. I have wanted to do that. Mother did a world tour once, but it only cost 4 thousand dollars.

  9. I'm happy you enjoyed it. A cruise would be sheer torture for me, but I know so many who think it's the best way to travel. You will never have to worry about me competing for a spot you want on a ship! I agree with you--this was so pleasurable because you did it with friends. That can make all the difference in the world, no matter how you are traveling.

  10. It sounds like a nice mix of activities; you learned and saw a lot and it wasn't as stressful as doing all the arrangements. I don't like the feeling of being responsible for every decision. I would like to take a Rick Steves tour of Ireland in the near future.

  11. I have never cruised except for girls but you make me want to try a cruise.

  12. A wonderful trip. I (we) considered a river cruise, but time slipped away and Laura was out of school.

  13. Interesting summary. Lack of sleep may have caused some weight loss. I'd be tempted to do a river cruise, but not with lots of others on a ship. Glad you're home! Linda in Kansas

  14. The river cruise has less people on it. I wonder how long Viking will keep the COVID safety policy in place.

  15. I think you’re brave to travel right now and particularly brave to opt for a cruise. I am happy for you that it worked well and you have good memories.

  16. I'm so glad it was such a good trip. I myself have an aversion to even thinking about being on a boat for two weeks! :-)

Hope you've had a super time with your family these past weeks.

  18. A chacun son gout ... some people love cruises, some hate 'em. I've never tried one. But I agree, it's always fun to travel with good friends.

    1. Wow! I had to look up chacun à son goût (to each his own OR everyone to his own taste). I love it! But you're absolutely right. I've loved both land tours, river and ocean cruises. I just don't like the flights to get to them.

  19. I don't think cruises would be for me.
