Patching a Hole With Love

Art recently showed me how he managed to put a hole in his favorite pair of shorts.

How did he do this anyway?

The hole is rather big, but when he wears it, his t-shirt will usually cover it. Still, it was possible that it could get bigger.

He decided that patching it with some sort of custom patch would work.

I've done this before. A friend of mine gave me a wonderful fleece jacket that she did not need. It belonged to her son when he went to Harvard.

Ummm... I did not go to Harvard and felt funny wearing a Harvard jacket so I ironed on a patch to cover the front logo.

I thought that panda bear was awfully cute.

We went to Walmart's sewing section to see their selection of patches, but nothing appealed to him until I found this.

It reminded us of our granddaughter, KC who would leave little messages for us on our whiteboard in the kitchen and my office before she left to return to Illinois with her parents. We could not bring ourselves to erase any of them.

Our granddaughter loved books about loving her family.

Robert Munsch's book was a favorite. I remember reading this to my first grade class and startling my students when they saw tears forming in my eyes.

When KC was little we'd have this game thinking up how far our love could go.

e.g.

"I'll love you to the moon and back.

I'll love you to the sun and back.

I'll love you to the universe and back."

I’m sure KC was surprised this summer when she saw her grandpa's patch.

POSTSCRIPT 1:

I was cleaning out the guest bedroom and saw this puzzle our daughter, son-in-law and KC sent Art for his birthday last year. He liked it so much that he framed it after he put it together.

Ahhhh....

That's why the patch appealed to us!

POSTSCRIPT 2:

And before our granddaughter left to return to Illinois earlier this summer, she'd updated her frame in my office with this sign.

  1. That is a cute patch, and the story of the messages on the whiteboard was very sweet. But what made me smile was the panda bear over the Harvard logo just because you didn't go there?? Haha my gosh, at least you're honest Kay!

  2. The line from the song "I love you a bushel and a peck..." is a frequent flyer in this house. I used to sing it to my granddaughters when they were younger. There's now a door knob to the broom closet with the saying and a cup inscribed with it (a mothers' day gift from the granddaughters. Maybe there's a custom patch with that inscription?!

  3. My mom wrote a whiteboard message on my great uncle's whiteboard at the age of 7 or 8. It was still there when he died some 55+ years later.

I'll have to investigate iron on patches. Nobody in my house sews and so when things get holes, I throw them out. However my oldest now only buys jeans with holes in them already. What a world we live in!

  14. That is the coolest patch ever!! Wouldn't be surprised if Art doesn't tuck in his shirt to show it off.

  15. Some patches can get very creative. And then there's the micro manager who took the "hell" off my Eagles cap!

  16. Awwwww. This is all so cute. But the cutest part starts with the two of you. Going together to the patch section to find something just for Art's favorite casual shorts is soooo sweet. So you went to Panda University, eh? Scouting has a panda patch for worldwide conservation. Linda in Kansas

  23. Oh my god, I made the mistake of picking up Love You Forever in a bookstore when my baby was about 6 months old. I was sobbing in the aisle! I'm sure all the post partum hormones had something to do with it, but to this day I can't read it.

    1. I don't know what it is about that book, but it really does make you cry. I haven't read it in a while. I wonder if it would still affect me that way.

  24. In my late night exhaustion from working the 3-day weekend, I hope somebody doesn't think Art's going to "moon" them! If he gets a back pocket hole, you may need a different patch! Linda in Kansas
