Margaret of Stargazer: A View Into My Universe commented that she would like my opinion of Project Hail Mary. I'd told her we were planning to see the movie since our good friends had told us how much they enjoyed it. She wrote in her post that she loved it but her significant other was so-so with the movie adaption and preferred the book.
We haven't seen a movie since.... wow! I can't remember. OK, I looked it up on my blog and apparently it was in January, 2025. We'd gone to see Wicked and enjoyed it.
Our friends, Cal and Myra told us they'd gone to see Project Hail Mary and liked it so much that they brought their son to see it a few days later. They totally loved it and recommended our going to see it also. Cal had even listened to the audiobook three times. I tried to borrow the Kindle copy of Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir from our library and was astonished to see that they had 49 copies, BUT I was #641 on the list. It would take 6 months for me to get the download for my Kindle.
That was amazing! I've never seen the library having that many copies of any book I've tried to borrow.
OK, I was a little nervous about going to see the movie since I'm assuming there might be lots of flashing lights and movement in a dark theater.
We had some time after my physical therapy for vertigo so once I was done, we went to Consolidated Theaters where our son had given us a gift certificate a while ago. I took a meclizine for insurance.... just in case.
We decided to share the giant cup of soda which we ended up not finishing and a large popcorn as well. The movie is 2 hours and 36 minutes so I didn't want to drink much and have to use the bathroom in the middle of it.
Would you believe we ran into Cal and Myra at the theater and could sit with them next to us!!!
And yes the movie was fun. Ryan Gosling did a great job. The alien did a great job too. I loved hearing the Maori song of farewell, Po Atarau towards the end of the movie.
However, I think with everything we've read about what an amazing movie it is, I guess our expectation was too high.
I liked the relationship between Ryan Gosling's astronaut character and the alien he becomes friends with.
But yes, there were lots of movement and blinking lights, etc. which had me worried and having to turn away from the screen.
Art is a huge science fiction fan and has read tons and tons of science fiction books. So this was just OK for him.
Another couple told me she thought the movie was fine, BUT the husband fell asleep.
As for us... well, I'm on the list to borrow the Kindle book in 6 months so I'll see how I feel then.
I haven’t been to a movie since before the plague, likely well before the plague. I am not planning a visit either.
ReplyDeleteI saw the movie with my book club, they had all read the book and I had not. I cried :') I was so touched by the relationship in the film.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't been to a movie theater for quite a while either. I used to read movie reviews but stopped doing that. We pretty much just wait until they are streamed on a channel we get. I think I'm sounding like an old fogey. Maybe I am.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. I wonder if I should go and see it in the theatre. I watch Korean dramas all the time on my computer screen that I don't realy feel the need for the big screen. Weren't you shocked at how expensive the drink was at the theatre?

ReplyDeleteMy son and daughter in law went to see this movie the last weekend I went. She loved it. He thought it was okay but not great. Opinions are all over the place on this movie.
ReplyDeletei had not even heard of this movie so i went to goole and watched the trailer. between that and your review, i am on the fence. maybe i will wait to see it on netflix!! we recently went to see "the drama" and i did not care for it. i watched the trailer and it did not highlight what the movie was really about. still, it was fun to get out and go to the movies on a rainy day!! great smiles, everyone looks like they had a great time!!

ReplyDeleteHonestly I've never heard of this movie. I wonder if it was available on our flights to and from Athens. I didn't see any movies of interest. We did watch some Larry David episodes - a first for us - but there's a limit to how many I can stand to watch.
ReplyDeleteI'm usually the opposite of most when it comes to liking movies so since everyone has been raving about it, I figure it would just be OK to me. I really don't have a desire to pay for seeing the movie but might watch it if it becomes available for streaming someday in the distant future.

That’s a lot of coke even for two people. I love movie theater popcorn but it’s usually too salty.

DeleteI am usually accompanied at the movies by people under the age of 12. Recently we saw "Hoppers" which I thought was about a rabbit, but it turned out to feature a talking beaver. It did have a great enviromental message which I had not expected. We usually go to the movies on Tuesday where our local theater features $5.50 tickets. I have a loyalty card that gets any ticket I buy a free small popcorn. I then pay about $6 or $7 for small drinks for each guest. But it keeps them still for almost 2 hours, lol!
ReplyDeleteI didn't even try to drink anything at the movie, knowing how long it was! You were brave, Kay. I did love the movie (mostly) and the music especially. Our expectations were sky high for the film though and I think that affected John's enjoyment of it. Glad you got to see it and thanks for your review!
ReplyDeleteOur son and daughter-in-law went to see this movie and both enjoyed it. I'm a science fiction fan since I was very young but I don't like going to see big screen movies anymore, even though I know it's probably the best way to see them. I will wait for when they stream it.
