This was a day about 3 weeks ago when one crisis after another just happened at once and drove us nuts!
(To be honest I'm writing this on April 8th and scheduling it for April 22nd because I've got too many posts already scheduled.)
The personal effects of Art's old friend, Jeff who he hadn't seen in a decade or more was given to him by the hospital. Because Art was listed as the emergency contact and the hospital couldn't locate anyone else who knew him they called us 5 different times hoping for more information. Jeff had alienated his family and we knew nothing of his life since then. Jeff's brother did not want to be contacted about him. Sigh...
Then our tax accountant said there was a problem with information that needed to be turned into her which we hadn't received in the mail. Art hunted everywhere not knowing what to look for exactly. Luckily, our daughter is better at financial matters and was trying to help us.
And then suddenly our Prius alarm started honking. LOUD! REALLY LOUD! 😨 So Art with his sore knee goes running down to try to turn it off, but it won't turn off.
This kept happening over and over. He'd come up and continue trying to work on the computer with my daughter long distance and then the car alarm would go off again and he'd have to run down and try to stop it somehow. A neighbor who is good with car problems came over and they thought they stopped it. But nope, it started up again.
Our nerves were really getting rattled. So Art called the Servco Toyota dealership. The person answering the phone asked what the problem was. I heard everything because Art put it on the speaker. She sympathized with the problem and said she understood the frustration and need for immediate help.
Then she excused herself to find the time to bring the car in. She came back and said Art could bring the car in the following Tuesday a week away. "WHAT?!?" we said. "We can't get the car to stop honking. We need to bring the car in NOW."
She repeated that it was the only time available. So Art asked to speak to her supervisor.
That's when the car alarm went off AGAIN! He went running down to try to turn it off.
The supervisor came on and I'm sorry. I'm usually quite patient. And I'm usually kind... usually. BUT good grief! My nerves were really rattled by then. I let the supervisor have it! I told her about the terrible person she had answering the phone, etc. etc. And you know what she said? Are you ready? 😦
She said we were talking to an AI generated person. Arrrghhh.... I could NOT believe it! I told her this was definitely ridiculous and bloggable.
Anyway, Art came back and told them he was bringing the car in now so it could go off at the dealership, and not at our house which must be driving the neighbors crazy. And would you believe the car stopped honking on the way to the dealership?
Everyone at the dealership were very nice and understanding.
The following day, they called us saying they installed a new battery and tried to do a diagnostic on the car, but couldn't get any results since it wasn't honking now.
But yes, we had to pay $535.42 for both battery and the diagnostic that couldn't show what the problem was. Sigh...
As for Jeff's personal effects. It's awesome that I have an amazing cousin who just happens to be a lawyer. She said Art has no responsibility and that it should go to the brother even thought he's said he wants nothing to do with it. Art mailed the items to Jeff's brother saying that's what his lawyer advised him to do.
OK... the tax stuff:
Our daughter helped us find what we needed and we sent the information to the accountant.
After all that Art was outside trying to patch up window leaks before the expected rainfall. And nope, we don't have any roofers in the family.
I'd like to say this was it for things to deal with but no... there was more to do in the days ahead.
Sometimes, when life rains, it pours.

Ironically, the Artificial Intelligence isn’t always very smart.
ReplyDeleteWell said!
DeleteThey just installed a new battery and didn't ask you or let you know?! Smh. When it rains it really does pour. Poor Jeff, I am sure his brother will just toss his things anyway :(
ReplyDeleteI'm sort of a no-nonsense person BUT do you suppose that friend that died was signaling to you with the horn? Just asking.
ReplyDeleteOh goooodness....
DeleteI'm glad you got a new battery, because batteries in electric cars are known to explode and cause terrible fires. I'm with your commenter, sillygirl, I think your friend, even in death, was looking out for you. I believe you owe a few thank-yous to the great beyond.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got the car sorted - that must have been so aggravating. It's good that Art doesn't have to deal with his old friend's effects - that's too much to expect.
ReplyDeleteKay how very stressful. Glad you guys are getting through it in as efficient a way as possible.
ReplyDeleteKay, they say things happen in 3's... don't know why... but seems like it's true. Hope things are calmer now... and stay that way.
ReplyDeleteYet more proof that AI isn't human and can't think or creatively problem solve. Great for straight info though although I don't use it. That honking would be SO stressful! I'm glad that the Jeff situation is sorted out. What a tragedy that the family was so fractured! Unfortunately, I don't think it's unusual.
ReplyDeleteMy dear old centenarian friend Esther Nowell used to say, "This, too, shall pass." And it is one of life's truths. However, while in the midst of calamities and woes, it is difficult to remember that truth.
ReplyDeleteGuess turning off hearing aids wouldn't work. Maybe the horn wore the battery down. When you run out of things to do, might want to contact any left-over humans at Toyota and ask them what the solution would be, if it happens again? Is there a pushme-pullyou connector plug from the horn to the main wire harness? I would've cut the wires. Guess the hospital was following rules, but what a bummer to have to mess with that stuff. Breathe, rest, saki. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteI go out of my way to avoid buying cars with alarms... specifically because of past experiences that while weren't as bad as yours, were similar.
ReplyDeleteOh, I agree with you, 1000%...an alarm without meaning is just NOISE, NOISE, NOISE! I'm glad it is fixed bur sorry it had to be such an aggravating ordeal.
ReplyDeleteSituations like that shouldn't happen to anybody. the 535 dollars would certainly get my attention. I hope it's repaired.
ReplyDeleteGrrr. I spent several hours this afternoon trying to get into my Microsoft account. My password wasn't accepted. ??? OK, try to reset my password. Identify yourself using the registered phone number to get a text message. Well, we no longer have that phone number but I can't change that until I sign in and I can't sign in without a new password. Other methods of identification led me into the weeds of scanning things - to where? - pass keys that never show up, and total frustration. I'll get back to it another time, but for now I don't even remember why I needed to get to my Microsoft account. :-/ Help, Geek Squad!
ReplyDeleteI also would have been driven mad (and angry) by this crazy situation!
ReplyDeleteGosh I am sorry this is all happening at once! I would be so frustrated and upset if I found out I was talking to AI without knowing it.
ReplyDeletebonny OGG
ReplyDeleteIsn’t that the case the horn stops on the way to the dealership. Or the pain stops the day your doctors appointment? Happens to me. Go figure that out! 🤔
Kay of Musings: Hi Bonny! And would you believe yesterday afternoon a horn started going off again so Art ran out the door to try to turn it off? But good grief! It turned out to be the neighbor’s car. Phew!
DeleteDear Kay and Art, You have both been through a lot but all your blogging buddies are in your corner sending you love. I am just one of them! I wonder if you noticed there was always a very slight pause after you spoke to that robot receptionist? And that your words were often repeated to you? Perhaps not, they might be making them a bit quicker now. That horn, I cannot stand noise, it truly rattles me, my anxiety makes me ill. You have more to tell us? Get it off your chest! Let us help you carry the load. That is what friends are for!
ReplyDeleteKay of Musings: Awww…. Thank you, Kay.❤️ I now have several friends whose name happens to be Kay. 😁 And you are definitely one of them.
DeleteYou know what? That’s the weird thing about that robot call… We totally couldn’t tell. It’s scary.
I’ve been reading about your adventures a long time. I love reading of all your travels. Your mother’s life is extremely interesting and how you grew up in the fields of Hawaii. Your history before Hawaii is fascinating too. We agree about politics also. I live far away but we have shared our career era too. Both teachers. Both two children. I’m glad to know you. I’m a little leery I’d spiders…web crawlers!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your kind comment, Betty. I do have to agree that mom's life is truly incredible. It's amazing to think of her early years at Kaunakakai, Molokai while her father tended to victims of Hansen's Disease (leprosy) at Kalaupapa to Yokohama in Japan to North Korea in her teenage years to Sendai after the war and then marrying a stranger in Hawaii when she was not yet 20. It boggles my mind. Even though she is now suffering from Alzheimer's, she says this is the happiest she's been in decades.
DeleteAnd oh yes, I love that we're both retired teachers with 2 kids, agree about politics and share our dislike of spiders. LOL!
