After fighting traffic and a computer glitch at the Great Lakes Hospital lab, I got my thyroglobulin blood panel test taken and headed out to the Lake Forest Hospital.
When I got to the nuclear medicine unit, the technician told me I would be given the radioactive pill and I'd need to swallow it quickly. I told her I wasn't very good with pills and wondered what other people do who can't swallow easily. No nonsense, she said, "They swallow it."
It was a little disconcerting to see the nurse take out a lead lined box, her hands covered with a glove, saying, "Open your mouth. Are you ready?"
Was I? No? I don't think so.... I nodded. But, by golly! I did swallow it.
That's done, now tonight I'm up late because I have to clean out my colon for the scan tomorrow. I'm not a fan of this procedure. Yuuuuck! I figure I have to do it for the colonoscopy every 5 years but I thought that would be it. I just hope they don't tell me I have to do it for the second scan on Friday! Uh, oh! Gotta go!

ReplyDeleteOh golly gosh, you are going through it at the moment. You sound cheerful enough in your blogs but I'm sure you're feeling pretty miserable some of the time. I do hope you don't have to go through the 'clean-out' process again next week - that I can sympathise with.

Sounds like the nurse was a little 'matter of fact'. My husband takes lots of pills, and he swears that the best way is to make sure and keep your teeth closed when swallowing, and it opens up your throat. I've tried it and it helps. Sorry you have all this in addition to moving, there are lots of sayings, like "when the going gets tough, the tough get going", etc. Sometimes though, it would just be nice to have things be a little easier and the hard times over with. That should be coming soon.

ReplyDeleteWow-- you're cleaning up on all fronts(and backs)!! Sounds absolutely horrible-- I have a swallowing pill phobia-- apparently there is a name and it's quite common--- If they can't be taken in liquid form, I mash them up-- don't know what I'd do in your situation-- don't suppose the medical people would be too sympathetic, looking at my size, it's obvious I don't have a problem swallowing food!! So congratulations for mission accomplished!
