Somebody just sent me a Forwarded e-mail that said:
Attached is a little dose of reality.
That moment just before the pain begins...
Then came a series of graphic photographs of the painful moments just before "the pain set in." There's photos of a man being gored by a bull, a man on a motorcycle as the tire is coming loose, a cyclist's arm being run over by a car, ETC. The last photo is of Barack Obama giving a speech in front of the Capitol building.
This was my reply to this person who I love very much and respect despite our differing opinions.
Juuust a little information for you. :-)
We happen to be Independent/Democrats. We think Obama is the only solution to get us out of this mess right now. He may not be able to do it but at least he'll try. With the Republicans in power we have gone from the biggest surplus in history to the biggest deficit. We've got a war that was brought on with deliberate misinformation. We've got inflation. We've got a huge breach in our constitution. Obama might not be able to fix all this because what's been done is too awful. When we've traveled around the world and talked to people, we have been surprised to find that they are more often better informed than Americans are about our political system. They cannot understand WHY Americans would support Bush and his policies.
We're in pain now.
Sigh.
Anyway, that's how we feel in this household.
But we respect the right for you to believe as you do.

To all that, I'd like to add that I love the way Obama goes to top intellectuals for perspectives and knowledge before making a crucial decision. He has a brilliant mind and he doesn't go half cocked into making an important decision.
Forgive me. I didn't want to do a political blog but I do have strong feelings on this. And as I said before, I respect everyone for their own feelings and beliefs. This is mine.

I’m using Comment Moderation for any post that is more than a day old because of aggravating SPAM. hey i'm an independent but usually vote republican but this year I can't...would want Palin as president...and I like Obama and his family.

ReplyDeleteHi Kay! There is no need to forgive you. Your e-mail to your friend was well spoken and how you felt. Some of the commercials on TV are bad, but some of the e-mails even worse. And even worse, the media. I for one am getting tired of the mud slinging and pulling the skelton's out of the candidates closet. Leave them there. Everyone has them. Get down to what matters. Kay, as you might imagine - being in the Deep South - I am inundated with anti-Obama emails. I just delete before reading as some have been blatantly racist. But more than that - it seems that people around here think that if you aren't Republican then you must be anti-Christian (and therefore, in their minds - evil) too. So there is lots of "peer pressure" to act Republican. Of course, I love letting everyone know I am NOT a Republican. LOL
ReplyDeleteKay, I just love the way you answered your friend's email. Very well stated. Clear, concise and to the point. I am repeating myself here (because I said this on another blog earlier) I do not like the back-biting, mud-slinging, skeleton-dragging, etc.

Good for you, Kay. I make no attempt to hide my preference for the Domocratic Party. After watching some of the R's convention this week, I see no end in sight to the dirty politics and mud slinging. But when you get personal email, it's right to try to speak the truth.

I am on the fence this time. I am happy that for the first time, in a long time, there are qualities in both men I like very much. It is refreshing, since in the past I felt that I was somehow compromising either way for a candidate I didn't like much at all. You are so right about the quagmire we are in right now. I wonder if anyone can pull us out in such a short period of time? Unfortunately, I believe the vast majority of Americans are far too focused on the near term and on the differences that divide our parties to really contemplate a way forward that may not be pleasant but necessary.

I agree with you, but I would never have seen the e-mail in the first place, because I delete all forwarded stuff without opening. Can't seem to find a nice way to tell everyone that I don't want this forwarded junk in my mailbox.

ReplyDeleteObama's political mentor in Hawaii was Frank Davis, a lifelong communist. His mentors in Chicago were Saul Alinsky, another lifelong communist and Jeremiah Wright. He has had a long-time friendship with William Ayers, an unrepentant terrorist who says he wishes he had planted more bombs. We want a man with these associations in the White House? I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteYou think we have a sputtering economy now? Wait until Obama with a Democrat majority in the Congress pass Obama's tax plan. Taxes will rise for virtually all income groups, but hardest hit will be the middle class who already pay for everything anyway. Under Obama the economy will tank.
Radical Islam would be emboldened to strike us again, and strike us hard because they know that under Obama U.S. foreign policy will be weak and vacillating.
The Republicans have not acquitted themselves well but the country will be severely weakened by an Obama presidency. He would be our worst president since Carter.
Obama is a genius. I am all for youth, intelligence, faith, optimism. Thanks for stepping out with this post, Kay!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your input, Louis. I looked up William Ayers and Saul Alinksy. I hope everybody else does too. Ayers lived in Obama's neighborhood and hosted a Meet & Greet party for him when he was a rising politician and contributed $200.00 to his campaign fund. More than a decade after his death students of Saul Alinksy hired Obama to work with Chicago's poor. They certainly weren't friends. I don't dispute that Obama has met a lot of people with different ideas. I believe he's learned a lot from everybody.

There's always two or more sides to everything. I think it's easy to pick one thing and make it sound terrible.
Perhaps Carter was not exactly effective in his presidency but no one can dispute his character and I won't even compare his presidency with the current president who had a Republican Congress for 6 of the 8 years he was in office.
Sigh...

ReplyDeleteThere's a lot about Obama "Louis" would like to write, but will go no further than to write that he is very dangerous for our country.
"Louis" doesn't think very highly of the late theologian/sociologist Reinhold Neibuhr as Neibuhr is largely responsible for the rise of "liberation theology,' of which Jeremiah Wright is an example of that thought gone to the extreme. But one thing Neibuhr got right (and "Louis" is paraphrasing here) was "when the 'outs' become the 'ins,' they become as corrupt as the 'ins' the 'outs' replaced. And this is exactly what happened to the Republican Congress. They forgot what they were there for. McCain, bless him, thumped their noses about this in his acceptance speech. "Louis" is so fed up with the antics of the GOP (and it was one of his relatives that coined that name!) that for the first time since he was old enough to vote, "Louis" has registered as an independent rather than as a Republican. "Louis" isn't happy with the performance of President Bush, though for reasons very different from most people's unhappiness with him. "Louis" is even less enchanted with the GOP Congressional delegation. Term limits! We need term limits in the Congress. We need to limit the House to 6 terms and the Senate to two. It wouldn't end all the corruption, but it would go a long ways toward making it less entrenched....
It was very interesting for me to read your comments, Louis. I really appreciate the time you took to tell me your thoughts. I wish everybody in the country could do so as nicely as you did. I can see the value of term limits.
ReplyDeleteThey say that people tend to live near people who think like they do. Everybody I knew in my Illinois neighborhood pretty much felt as I did. The Internet has really opened up the world to see how people outside their sphere are thinking also.
Although I do not agree with you I'm glad to be able to understand how and why you are feeling as you do.
I think this was worded beautifully Kay. McCain's views on many things scare me, but not as much as his running mate..I am afraid for this country...

"...She is anti-abortion, anti-gun control, doesn't believe that humans contribute to global warming, wants creationism taught in public schools, she opposes a comprehensive sex education program for public schools and favors an abstinence-only program for sex education. There is nothing moderate about Sarah Palin...."
"She said she told Washington they could keep their money--that if Alaska wanted that bridge, Alaska would pay for it themselves, when in fact she told her people to take advantage of earmark money "while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist...."
She's really not a change that McCain is promising. She garantees keeping us to the same downward spiral the Republicans are dragging us down.
