Sarah of Brit Gal in the USA told me that I should watch Doc Martin on Netflix (Instant Stream). She guaranteed that I'd enjoy it.I got this from Wikipedia:
"(Martin) Clunes plays (fictional) Portwenn's local GP, Martin Ellingham, a brilliant and highly successful London surgeon until he developed haemophobia (an extreme fear of blood) that prevented him conducting operations. After retraining as a GP, he applied for a post in the sleepy Cornish village of Portwenn, where he had spent childhood holidays with his aunt.
Much of the show's humour revolves around Ellingham's interactions with the local Cornish villagers. Despite his surgical brilliance, Ellingham lacks vital social skills and any semblance of a bedside manner, and often fails to understand other people."
I used to enjoy House a lot, but haven't been watching lately. I think I got tired of the negativity. I wasn't eager to watch another doctor who had no bedside manner. Actually they did have a bedside manner... rude.
However, Art and I finally decided to give it a try. After watching the first episode of Season 1 we weren't entirely impressed, but were still somewhat drawn to it. We're on Season 3 now and are completely, totally hooked. The question is why? The character of Dr. Ellingham is not exactly likable and he sure doesn't look like Dr. McDreamy of Grey's Anatomy, and yet you care about him. There's something about the show that just sucks you in. You also begin caring about the other quirky characters in the village. I'd even love to see Cornwall after watching this series.
There are 4 Seasons of Doc Martin available on Netflix. I've read that they're planning a Season 5 in 2011. We have a season and a half to watch yet. I'm going to really miss it once we finish watching all of them. Maybe then I can get back to my blogging more regularly, too.

ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean, you'd 'even' like to watch Cornwall after seeing Doc Martin!!! You mean that you didn't want to visit before??? Actually, I've never seen Doc Martin, though I've heard that it's good. Have you watched Midsomer Murders? Or New Tricks? or Merlin? I don't know whether you can get any of those series, but they're well worth watching.
ReplyDeleteWe love Doc Martin. You should watch a programme called William and Mary if it's available. Martin Clunes plays William and you couldn't find a more contrasting character. It was a wonderful show about middle-aged love but they only made two or three series.

ReplyDeleteAs for other recommendations and I know you'll love these - we adore all the Michael Palin travel shows also available streaming through Netflix. We have already watched Around the World in 80 days (our fave), Sahara and now we have Himalaya and Europe lined up in the queue.

I don't watch a lot of tv really but a friend of mine enjoys '48 hours', a murder mystery show.

ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. After watching the first episode I thought it was just strange and not all that funny. But, I stuck with it and now I'm half way through season 2 and I can't wait for the next episode. I love the small town setting and the local characters are great. I highly recommend this series!! I'm hooked!
ReplyDeleteI'm awaiting Netflix's delivery of the very last Doc Martin disk (to date), and I'm already sad to know I'll have to say good-bye to these wonderful characters soon. Waaa! However, a friend recommends I give "Hamish Macbeth" a shot--it's about a slightly quirky police officer (who has a dog, yay) and his interactions with the quirky residents of his small Scotland village. Sounds promising; Netflix (in the US) has 3 series of it.
