Art was an Openlands TreeKeeper in Illinois. He took some classes and was certified to help care for trees in Chicago. He has always loved trees. We had an apple, sour cherry, oak, locust, ash, Japanese blood maple and a horse chestnut tree surrounding our house. We both miss having cool, tall trees on our Hawaii property, but we just don't have the space. We have to make do with our little lemon and papaya trees.While we were visiting in Illinois this past May our huge, old horse chestnut tree fell down when a strong spring wind came through. We planted a weeping cherry tree that we bought from Home Depot.
We were thrilled to see this photo that our daughter, Tiffany e-mailed us. The tree looks like it's very happy with branches spreading out like wings.
The ash tree is now wearing its glorious fall colors. We were really surprised to see how big that tree had grown as well. We planted it when it was only about 4 feet tall and now it's reaching to the sky. We're thrilled that little KC is loving it, too.
I do love seeing these fall photos. We miss seeing the change of seasons here in Hawaii. Granted, I really do love it here in January.
And yes, those are REAL pumpkins at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

ReplyDeleteI'd love to grown one of those humungous pumpkins some time, but then what would I do with it? One town here in Maine has a boat race, with the "boats" made out of these large carved-out pumpkins. Maybe that's what I could do with it.

ReplyDeleteThe leaves on the ash tree are glorious, and the big pumpkins are fun. I love the changes of season we have here in the Pacific Northwest. We have some early color, but the real burst is yet to come. The nights are getting colder as well as the daytime temps. Today looks to be sunny!
The trees look nice. But, what's there to know about caring for them that you need to be certified??? Perhaps the subject of another post?
ReplyDeleteMy favorite tree of all is the GOLDEN SHOWER TREE. I have seen it only in Hawaii. I would have grown one, but it requires a huge yard because of its size. Nothing is prettier than to see the tree shower yellow petals all over the emerald green grass!!!
We got a taste of fall weather in Seattle and enjoyed seeing the pumpkins in the markets. It is fun, but, as you say, knowing that we have a lot of wonderful warm weather ahead of us here is also lovely.
ReplyDeleteWe are lucky to have room for big food bearing trees on our 1/3 of an acre, like our breadfruit and avocado. On my late mother in law's house next door to us there is a giant royal poincienna that has the most beautiful orange blossoms in June.
It is still pretty roomy here on the Big Island, compared to crowded Oahu. Room for big trees.

ReplyDeleteGigi: He had to learn how to fertilize, mulch and prune trees in order to keep them healthy. He also had to learn to spot insect infestations and diseases. Trees do need care.

ReplyDeleteKavita: Yes, they really are real. I remember having to touch it to believe it. They grow and display it every year at the Chicago Botanic Gardens.

ReplyDeleteOne thing I love about West Virginia is the autumn scenery -- we're surrounded by tree-covered mountains here, and every walk and drive is a delight this time of year.
