A while back there was a Star Advertiser article about a made for TV movie documenting a ghost that's supposed to be haunting the Iao Movie Theater on Maui. Apparently, there's been a number of people who have encountered a ghost named Emma. They say she is sweet and friendly. This is wonderful since I'd be crabby if I was stuck in an old movie theater.
I've talked to a number of people who swear they've seen spirits. My aunt and grandmother were supposed to have been able to see spirits of people who have moved on.
My college dorm friend told me that her Hawaiian grandmother was a clairvoyant. I can't remember the specifics but it involved her losing her contacts in the lawn and a spirit pointing it out to her.

I've also heard lots of stories of Pele, the goddess of fire and the volcanoes who is known to walk with a white dog on the Big Island. She's also been known to ask for rides and disappearing from the backseat.
My neighbor told me that she saw my father walking along the street near our home not knowing that he had already passed away. She said she's been able to see spirits almost all her life and that they are usually people with unresolved issues from life.
Makes sense to me.
No, I'm serious... I think there are things we just can't be sure of. I'm keeping my mind open.

Good for you for keeping an open mind, Kay. Just because you and I have never seen ghosts doesn't mean they are not around.

ReplyDeleteYes I do believe in spirits and yes Ihave been to a few clairvoyants in my time which leaves me in no doubt that some people have the ability to communicate with the deceased.
I recall being in a small village in Scotland and met a man who I later found out to be a clairvoyant. He told me he was speaking to my grandmother and told me things that only she would know. It was scary and upsetting at the time but it happened. I don't think we ever will know until we ouselves have passed. I have no fear about whats coming though. I recall my Dad telling me (after he nearly died after an operation years ago) that he saw bright lights and lots of people he knew telling him to come with them but then he looked down and saw my mother and decided not to go. My grandfather also saw my grandmother after she passed away. She was sitting at the end of their bed. Plus the night she died my brother swears she lifted his bed covers up to fully cover him, gave him a kiss and left. He thought he was dreaming until they told him the next day she had died during the night. He is definitley not one to exaggerate and is very down to earth. It is fascinating really. I will be interested in what your other readers think too.
Wow! This is fabulous, Lilly! I love it! My daughter just told me a story about a similar thing which I will add on to these comments as soon as I get some free time today. I'm just dropping in quickly. My life is absolutely busier than busy right now. Yikes!
DeleteI think there is plenty in this world (and the next) that we know nothing about. I am blessed by dreams that are as real as waking life when my son visits me. And sometimes my mother. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you get to visit with your mom and son, DJan. It must be a loving comfort to you. To be honest... I really do believe that spirits are there smiling at us, worrying about us and trying to guide us.
DeleteI don't question that there are things that are beyond my knowledge and understanding. I think are minds have to stay open to things that are beyond our experience.

ReplyDeleteYes, I believe! I cannot believe that our spirits and our energy disappears. I have to believe that there is a place where our energy goes. I've had too many messages from my late mom! Rainbows at amazing times in my life, which bring comfort after hard decisions. Great post!

The evil ones are up to no good and trying to encourage mortals to do terrible things while the good ones are our ancestral spirits that guard and guide us here on earth. ReplyDeleteNever seen a ghost but I once had an out of body experience. That particular day I felt very stressed and overwhelmed. I explained it to my therapist and she agreed it could happen. I think my spirit left my body for a brief second because it was not happy to be there. I still don't feel 100% my old self again. Maybe this is what happens when a person experiences depression.

ReplyDeleteMy wife was brought up at the Volcano House on the Big Island. Her Uncle George Lycurgus was locally famous for propitiating Pele by throwing a bottle of gin into the volcano cratar. He was quite a character. Anyhoo, one of the Greek aunts swore up and down she saw Pele on the side of the road leading to the Volcano. Hawaii is prime territory for supernatural feelings. One of my Hawaiian friends said Molokai gives her the shudders--a whole island. And how about all the problems with uncovering burials?
ReplyDeleteThis week's "Newsweek" has an article about there really is a Heaven, based on ths doctor's experiences of consciousness when he was in a coma. I recently read that Ariel Sharon has been in a coma from a stroke for six years. I immediately wrote a letter to my children saying that, if such a coma happened to me, they should NOT feed me. ABSOLUTELY not at all. To me, feeding someone in a coma is the heighth of superstition. In my heart of hearts, I think it's all baloney, but I am also not out to hurt people's feelings if they believe otherwise.

Oh dear, I'm in trouble on this one. I see by the comments I'm among a bunch of spirit/ghosts believers. I do not believe in such things.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter mentioned how her friend told her that soon after her grandfather died, her little 2-3 year old son kept pointing at walls or in the air calling out to his great-grandfather. It truly seemed as though her son could see the spirit of his great-grandfather. It made a believer out of her.

ReplyDeleteCool topic! Remember the movie "Ghost" with Patrick Swayze? It can really happen, to some degree. About 8 years after my first husband died, he came back to reassure me after my troubling 2nd marriage/divorce. I hadn't been drinking or taking meds. I could feel his presence and breathing, but no words or visual. That's all I needed. It wasn't scary at all. I've had other young widows report similar instances.
ReplyDeleteHawaii has some powerful history, and I don't think we can deny a lot of the stories. I wouldn't want to get in Pele's way, or obstruct the menehunes from building things overnight. If you don't believe in Hawaiian spirits, just try taking home "any piece of rock" from the islands. Many have had bad luck until they returned the item to Hawaii.
My nurses training included lectures from others who had relatives on their deathbeds, who recovered, and could report many things that were said and done in the room. Be careful what you speak in a room with an ill or injured person. Hearing is the last to go.

That is such wonderful advice, DrumMajor. I've heard that about hearing being the last thing to go. I've often heard of nearly unresponsive people showing flickers and tiny movements to loved ones saying things to them.
DeleteUntil there is firm evidence for one side or the other, I'm keeping an open mind too. I can see no reasons why there shouldn't be ghosts.
