I wrote a post earlier about how I haven't been able to find photos of old girlfriends in Art's past. After all, I was 22 when I met Art, but he was five years older with lots of life experiences. He had already spent five years in the Air Force and been stationed in California's Vandenberg AFB, New Hampshire's Grenier AFB, and Hawaii's Hickam AFB. His next post would have been Greenland. He says he left the Air Force because he'd met me, but I think Greenland had a lot to do with it. The joke was that there was a girl behind every tree in Greenland. Unfortunately, trees were hard to find in Greenland.
Ah... but I digress.
What I was trying to get at was that I couldn't find any sources of Art's passion... until I came across these photos... LOTS of these photos.

And every so often he still talks wistfully of his Alfa Romeo. Whenever he sees an Alfa Romeo in a movie, he'll point it out to me.
He'd stored the car in his sister's garage in California and frankly he realized that he couldn't keep it there forever taking up space where his brother in law might want to store his own car.
I remember him taking that trip to California to sell it. It was sad. I never met this old flame. When I met him in Hawaii, Art was driving his practical, down-to-earth, white VW bug which I liked a great deal.
Still... every so often... I know he still thinks about that first love.

how sweet, men do love their cars!
ReplyDeleteHaha, nice new facts emerge.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised the Alfa Romeo was not red.
Great car Art and wonderful photos. I think he found the love of his life, don't you?
ReplyDeleteSuch a nice car! My parents had an Austin Healy Sprite when I was first learning to drive. I loved that car, too. I can relate to falling in love with a car, Kay. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat is some heavy competition, but I think you are the long run winner. I had a little MGB years ago that I still miss.
ReplyDeleteI used to date a guy who drove a sports car convertible. I was impressed!
ReplyDeleteCars were such a big deal to guys in those days. Terry was a big car lover and can do all kinds of car repairs. Now it's electronic gadgets that get the guys going.
ReplyDeleteMy brother was in the Air Force and after 3 years in Texas, he spent his last year in Greenland!! It certainly was not green!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool car Art had!!!
ReplyDeleteWow. That car is awesome looking. Didn't California have storage units in those days? It is such a shame that a classic such as that had to be sold.
ReplyDeleteArt says he loved his car too much to let it rust away in a storage unit. Good grief! I wonder if he feels this way about our Prius now.
DeleteOh, wonderful old car. No wonder it was his first love. I can still remember the first time I saw an Alfa Romeo (such a perfect name). I was 18 and it was years before I ever saw another one, but the thought of that first glimpse is with me still.
ReplyDeleteK
That would've been quite a car, Alfa Romeo!
ReplyDeleteHow could you not love an Alfa Romeo. You'll not find another girl friend in those slides!
ReplyDeleteNone of those cars are red, so that's a good sign.
ReplyDeleteAll those photos are of the same car, Hank... from every which angle.
DeleteGlad he traded the car, eventually, for you! The VW was probably easier to maintain, too. I always liked my high school band director's '62 Jaguar. It was a cool model, before they started modernizing and ruining the exterior appearance. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteRight, Jaguars used to look like they'd come right out of an Alec Guinness movie. My college roommate had one and it was sporty indeed. It was a convertible. Va va va Voooom! Full disclosure: the canvas roof leaked when it rained. It just had that unbeatable reputation. and everyone who rode in it would start laughing and being happy.
ReplyDeletemy dad was in Greenland with the Army Air Corps in WWII LOL
ReplyDeleteHave a Good Weekend,

The dream car of youth - the love you never forget.
ReplyDeleteHusband loved his Datsun 240Z...before I knew him. I only remember his bondo bucket Chevy Malibu.

If I've heard the stories once, I've heard them a million times. Tales of the prized Cadillac that no car has or ever will equal.
