When we lived in Illinois, I think we may have seen a rainbow perhaps two or three times in the 35 years that we lived there.
Here in Hawaii I can usually spot one every couple of days. Oahu is having a drought problem like many other parts of the U.S. However, we do get quite a few showers up on our mountain which produce gorgeous rainbows.
You'd think I'd get tired of them, but no... They still fill me with awe. I guess it's like the cherry blossoms in Japan. They are here for such brief periods. Sometimes, in the few moments I run to get my camera, they're gone.
Like our lives, we have to enjoy all the moments of wonder while we can.

ReplyDeleteI never get tired of seeing rainbows, either. There was a beautiful one coming home from work yesterday; the sky was completely grey except for a small break in the clouds through which the rainbow peeked through.

ReplyDeleteI love rainbows, too! Great photo! We get some nice rainbows here and I will run out with my camera to capture them, even in the rain :-) I spent a large part of my day a couple days back, running around taking photos and enjoying the fall leaves because they are very brief here in Colorado. Sure enough, that night a windstorm blew many of them away. I think it is so wonderful to appreciate those brief and beautiful moments in life, even if some chores or errands have to wait. Rainbows are a gift :-) Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteI remember one super weird year where all, and I mean ALL the leaves fell in one day. I had the worst time driving to school because the leaves were cascading down on my windshield. It's the only time that ever happened. It was beautiful though. We went from fall to winter in one day in Chicago.

DeleteI love the rainbows in Oregon. I suppose because everything is so green here they seem so much brighter than rainbows in Texas.
ReplyDeleteSo true....once in Laughlin, NV, we saw a quadruple rainbow. People all stood outside to take in the beauty. Very rare to see rainbows in a desert I presume.
ReplyDeleteSunday we visited the Aloun pumpkin patch in Kapolei with our grandkids and saw the most unusual rainbow in the mountains above Pearl City. I think it was a rainbow but we couldn't be sure. Instead of a thin bow...it looked like a thick short rainbow. It was a rainbow colored mass beaming from the mountain. What else could it be?

ReplyDeleteThere are many, many works of literature with that exact CARPE DIEM theme which you have described. Carpe diem is Latin for "Seize the Day": today is here, tomorrow is not certain. "Gather Ye Rosebuds, while ye may, Old time is still a flying" (Herrick)or "Time's winged chariot is hurrying near" (Marvell). It just popped into my mind that your son seems to really live by that carpe diem motto. We had a guest from Ohio and there was a fairly ordinary rainbow visible from our house, but she kept marvelling at it and reached for her camera. She couldn't get over it. A rainbow is a great symbol for the evanescence of life and the passage of time.

DeleteI've. Gotten blase about rainbows too. I saw one arching over a cruise ship in port the other day and didn't even bother to get the camera out.
ReplyDeleteso, if you Hawaiians have too many rainbows, just send some to the midwest and Kansas. I'm pretty sure the one sung about in the Wizard of Oz was a Hollywood rainbow. Might see one every 4-5 years around here. Saw three, side by side, in Maui when driving next to the pineapple fields. They wouldn't fit into the camera. Still prefer an unobstructed view of the sun setting in Hawaii, as it drops off the edge of the ocean.... DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteWhile I understand the science of rainbows, I do think they are magical. Of course in the rainy PNW we do get more than in some areas, but you have to have the SUN as well as the rain, at the same time. That doesn't happen too often.
