Our tour to China was incredible and we all had such a great time. However, the thing that stood out for us was how our group gelled and became a family unit caring and sharing with each other.
We were dreading the day when we would all be parting, so Art and I "volunteered" to host a post-tour get-together which eased our separation knowing we'd see each other again.
Art and I have been on a few other tours to Turkey, Egypt/Jordan, Netherlands and Alaska. We enjoyed all the people we met immensely, but aside from Jean and Mike who became long lasting friends after the Netherlands, we've drifted away from everyone else. We certainly wouldn't have been able to have a post tour party because everybody lived in different corners of the US. Hawaii is different, of course. Except for one couple who live on the Big Island, the rest of us live on Oahu.
This past Saturday was the BIG day. I wondered what it would be like. Would we still feel the same even though we no longer spend almost every waking minute together in a foreign place?
Soon... everybody arrived. Joyous hugs, kisses and smiles confirmed that nothing had changed. We were still a loving travel family.
Mom took this photo of our fun group for us.
We spent lots of time enjoying photo albums that Roy and Chieko had made. We talked about termites, ants, cockroaches, illnesses, other trips, health insurance, photography, plant diseases and of course, China. We shared our albums from China and the National Parks and gave out little goodie bags you can see on the table containing a few essentials for everyone's next trip.
The buffet table was groaning from the weight of all the dishes.
(We didn't take many photos because we were too busy talking to everybody.)
There were spinach rolls, little pizza hors d'oeuvres on English muffins, Korean salad (all made by Janet and Richard), taro duck (Allwyn and Audry gave DVDs of all the photos he took), crispy gau gee min noodles (Roy and Chieko also gave everyone DVDs of their photos and videos), lucky bamboo plant, beer, grilled steak (from master griller Gerald and Eva), a huge sushi platter, barbecued teriyaki chicken (compliments of Pearl and Guy) and Mom's famous macaroni salad. I also served some grilled veggies in olive oil and Italian seasoning, mango slices and pickled cucumbers. Darn! I forgot to take a photo of the desserts. Mandy and Marilyn brought a Magic Cake and Orange Chiffon cake (along with beautiful anthuriums). Janet also made a fantastic apple crisp.
The lovely thing about Hawaiian pot lucks is that at the end of the evening, everybody gets to bring home food for the following day. We were able to savor all the left overs at Sunday's dinner.
As Pearl said so many times, "The best part of the tour was the friendships and camaraderie we all shared". And we're still not saying goodbye. Allwyn and Audry have volunteered to host the next party!

what a wonderful event, to keep such good friends, its a wnderful thing and what a lovely meal!!!
ReplyDeleteKay you look lovely, are you letting your hair grow long?
Oh thank you, Laurie. This is as long as it will get though. I'm losing so much hair that if it got any longer, you would be able to see how bald I'm getting.
Deletenice buffet table
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful way to extend your friendships and share memories of your trip.
ReplyDeleteWow! A progressive ever-floating voyage! With better food than the usual cruise ship. Looks like fun! DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteThat is so great that you have made new friends who seem to want to remain friends. I am always saying that we ned to keep making friends as we get older. This looks to be the perfect group. And wonderful food, to boot. What more could you ask for!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful adventure redux. We have not made such close friends on any of our trips, and I kind of miss the idea of that.
ReplyDeleteAre you enjoying your self imposed freedom from blogging on weekends?
Would you believe I actually DO miss not hearing from all you wonderful friends over the weekend. On the other hand, there is a certain relaxation that the break can give you. Only having to come up with five things to blog about is pretty darn easy.
DeleteThis is so neat.
ReplyDeleteOh how wonderful this must've been. And whoa, look it all the food!!! My mouth was literally watering as I looked at these pictures. YUM YUM YUM!!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful you could get together again. Reading about China makes me think it is a very interesting place to visit. Dianne
ReplyDeleteOh yes! It's definitely interesting!
DeleteYou are such a traveler. My daycations are all I can manage! It warms me to see your photos!
ReplyDeleteI can see this becoming a regular event. How lovely to make and keep new friends:-)
ReplyDeletewhat a fun continuation of a marvelous trips with new friends...
ReplyDeleteSuch fun! You were lucky to travel with such a compatible group. Makes all the difference.
ReplyDeleteI've been traveling and eating well in various places, but I'm looking forward to getting back to Hawaiian style dining, potlucks especially!
I do love the more stress free pot lucks with everybody contributing.
Deletewhat a wonderful thing to do Art and Kay! The food looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe you were able to organize such an event so soon after the trip. That is fantastic and certainly speaks well of the bonds that were formed.
ReplyDeleteThe trip was in May, so it wasn't too bad. I wonder when the next party will be though.
DeleteAll right--party on! A rolling party. I may have to come to Hawaii.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great get-together. I often think of folks we've met on tours but know we most likely will never see them again. The person I'd love to see the most is Jenny, our tour guide in Australia/New Zealand. She was such a delight. I wish we did dinners the way you do, with leftovers for everyone. That must be SO much fun!
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you all got to get together again to get reacquainted and to relive such a great trip. The food looks amazing. I love pot lucks. The really cool thing is that you are all ready thinking about the "next" party.
ReplyDeleteWe have only done one tour in our travels. The rest were independent trips. So we haven't really met people who were fellow travelers, just the people we met who lived along the way. We especially liked meeting locals and having conversations with them.
ReplyDeleteBut it is so like you to "collect" friends. You are such a people person.
What a delightful gathering of your traveling friends from your China vacation, and happy that the bond you developed was still there, and may it always be so.
ReplyDeleteNow I REALLY dream of making one of those Air & Sea trips!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteBest party I've seen in awhile, Kay
ALOHA, Friend
from Honolulu
Comfort Spiral
=^..^= <3
With enough of these parties planned, the NEXT group tour will soon come into the conversation :)
ReplyDeleteL...w
What a great idea to organize a get-together after such a beautiful journey. You sure were a wonderful group of friends together. The food makes my mouth water.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week, Kay!
Wil, ABCW Team.
How wonderful! I think it's great that you are all continuing on with the reunions of the travel group. What a fine spread! :-)
ReplyDeleteI've never travelled with an adult tour group and I'm trying to choose one for a trip to China. This is very encouraging to me as I have many qualms about making a choice! Any advice (since obviously you chose well!).
ReplyDeleteThe first thing my husband did was to figure out where in China he wanted to explore. Then we asked all our friends here what travel agency they used for China. Since it appeared that most people went with Air and Sea, we decided to go with that option.
DeleteHe liked Viking also, but it was quite a bit more expensive when you added the air fare from Hawaii. It's often helpful to write a post about it and ask people if they might have an opinion.
Art would advise NOT to use a Chinese tour agency from China since we'd read a LOT of reviews citing how horrible they were. It would be safer to use a U.S. tour agency.
Thanks for those thoughts. I'll look into those two companies for sure.
