Bad Luck?

Are you superstitious?  I like to think I'm not.

Buuuut....

I might avoid opening an umbrella indoors.

I might avoid walking under ladders... mostly because somebody might be at the top and could drop something on me.

If a black cat crosses my path, well... is there another way to get where I'm going?

Does death come in threes?  Every time two people we know passes away, I do wonder who will be next.  This past spring we sadly well exceeded that number.

Then there's the whole bit about mirrors breaking and giving you seven years bad luck.  Naaahhh.  That one doesn't bother me.... much.

Knocking on wood, crossing my fingers, wishing on a wishbone?  Yup.  I do it all.  Why?  I don't know.  I just do it.

And Friday the 13th?

We'll see.

How about you?

  1. Oh, no. I didn't realize it was Friday the 13th or I would not have gotten out of bed this morning.

  2. Me, superstitious? No - I just have little habits that help me through the day . . . ;-)

  3. I think I'm the same, I'm not really superstitious, but have got into the habit of 'touching wood', throwing spilt salt over my left shoulder, all of those sorts of things. I think it's hard to get out of habits ingrained from childhood, not matter how silly we know them to be. We have to keep doing them, just in case.

  4. I am the "knock on wood" kind of superstitious, but not much more than that, at least not usually. :)

  5. I am superstitious, but not too awfully much so. I also think things come in threes and wait for them when the first one happens. I know it's silly, but if I didn't do them and something bad happened, I would wonder.. :-)

  6. I am a bit superstitious but have come to think 13 is actually lucky for me!

  8. I do believe in the "comes in threes" thing and am selfishly relieved when the third one happens and I and my loved ones are unaffected. I also think airplane crashes are in that group. None of the other superstitions bother me.

  9. Do not open an umbrella in the house. Never walk under a ladder. Hope a black cat does not cross your path. If you leave something behind, never go back for it.

I had a very superstitious grandfather and like to think it did not affect me, but he indoctrinated me on so many no-no's that they never fail to jump out when presented.

Spill salt, throw it over your left shoulder quickly. Break a mirror and you are in for seven years bad luck.

That same grandfather grew up in coal mining communities and spent his early years in the coal mines. None would dare go into the mines without paying attention to all superstitions.

    1. I wonder how that salt over the shoulder came to be. I can see why your grandfather would worry about fate in a coal mine.

  12. Friday the 13th is our lucky day here. It's the day G and I met. I'm not very good at being supersticious about the other things too. But I love the 13th.

  13. I'm not very superstitious, except I have such good memory (at least when I was younger) that it has become a curse. I wish I could forget all my mistakes and unfortunate experiences. Hence, I overanalyze and avoid everything possible...so you know where that gets me.

    1. So it's good that I have a poor memory? Too funny.

I've read comments you've made not just on my posts but Glenda's and I'm amazed at how super smart you are. I wish you lived close by so I could ask you things all the time. It's good to analyze things before you make a move.

  14. My parents had a friend who wouldn't go to work on Friday the 13th.
Black cats? I just wish Lindy had a cat friend in our house. They could cuddle together when we're out.
Ladders? I'd rather walk under one than climb one, but I usually walk around them for safety's sake. They could easily fall down.
None of the spilt salt sort of stuff for me, either. No cross-my-heart or anything. I'm sure it's years since I've even said "knock on wood" and I certainly never looked for wood on which to knock.
So, no, I don't think I'm superstitious at all.
I even forgot it was Friday the 13th today. September 11 really blows the stuffing out of such a superstition.
All the best to your mom, and hi to Art.

    1. We did have tsunami sirens going off early Friday the 13th morning at 1:30 AM. Woke a ton of people up on Oahu, Molokai and Maui. It was a false alarm, but it started the day off "on the wrong foot." :-)

  15. And how about not crossing anyone on the stairs or birds tapping on the window.....shivers!!! ;)

    1. The stairs? The birds on the windows? Wow! I've never even heard of those. It'd be interesting to hear what other superstitions other countries have.

  18. I did think twice about driving 400 miles on a Friday the 13th, but arrived home just dandy. Wish there was a way to avoid the 3 skunks on the road and the cattle truck in front of me.
From looking over your recent posts:
I own the cheesy Hawaiian ocean shower curtain because it's the theme in my bathroom, along with a film photo of Nemo and Dory.
Nemo and Dory can talk in the ocean.
The Super phone cover would have a good warranty for those up to 1 year old. "Lifetime" is a relative definition it seems. Companies shouldn't consider the length of their warranties until it's Hawaii-proof.
The Koa pancakes look like a farmer's breakfast! Spam musubi might be lighter?!
    Cheers, DrumMajor

    1. Welcome back, DrumMajor. I hope you closed your car vents as soon as you saw the skunks and not only when the smell invaded your car.

There are LOTS of gorgeous Hawaiian print type shower curtains. It just appears cheesy to us because we live here. I liked the English garden look because we loved England. On the other hand, we love Japan too, but we wouldn't want any "cheesy" Japanese print either. Picky! Picky!

You should see the window warranties. :-)

The Koa breakfasts are definite farmers' breakfasts for sure!

  19. Nope, not superstitious at all. In fact both of my father's parents were born on Friday the 13th and we owned a black cat for 17 years! Plus at our shop there are tons of ladders that I'm sure I've walked under at one time or another. So nope not at all.

  21. I always knock on wood, and never walk under ladders. I also have never stepped on a crack although it takes talent. Black cats? I love them.

    ***

The story of Friday 13th dates to dawn on Friday, October 13, 1307, when scores of French Templars were simultaneously arrested by agents of King Philip, later to be tortured in locations such as the tower at Chinon, into admitting heresy and other sacrilegious offenses in the Order. Afterward, they were put to death. Some Templars are thought to have escaped to Scotland.

Friday the 13th has been negative ever since. Durning this period, many Europeans believed the Templars had Satanic powers and would curse those who persecuted them.

My maternal grandfather was a 33rd Degree Mason, my grandmother was in the Order of the Eastern Star and my boy cousins were members of the Demolay (named for Jacques de Molay) and girl cousins were 'Rainbow Girls.'

Masons and their families are said to be the heirs of the Templar knights who survived King Phillip. Many of those involved in the American Revolution were members of the Masonic Order. One thing for certain, these folks had strong political ties and ran the US for many years. Being Catholic, I was never an insider as were all my Protestant cousins. Dianne

    1. Oh wow! What an amazing genealogy you have, Dianne! I've always wondered how Friday the 13th came to be. I'd heard explanations about it just being the number 13 because Judas was the 13th person at the last supper (or something like that). Thank you for the historical explanation. This is so interesting!

  22. Hey!
Did you know that black cats are considered GOOD LUCK in England? I was surprised when I found that out!

  23. Apart from a very mild (and idle) observance of avoiding doing/creating anything that amounts to thirteen, I don't pay any attention to bad luck charms.

But Oh Boy do I know some otherwise pragmatic Chinese (even ABC's) who go to great lengths to use (or avoid) anything involving chinese lucky or unlucky numbers.
They'll also go to a fair bit of expense and trouble to have 'good fortune' omens pointing to the cash register in their shop, & stuff like that.

  25. I'm not superstitious, but yet all of those old saying flash through my mind anyway. I understand that momentary cloud of doubt.
I do think it's interesting that I never once heard mention of Friday the 13th while it was in progress. it turned out to be a very good day for me. I hope for you too.

  26. I try to ignore the negative superstitions, but do observe two positives. I knock on wood to help good things happen and also rub the belly of a little "laughing Buddha" statue for good luck. These things must work to some extent--the little Buddha keeps smiling and my little family is still here and relatively healthy.

  27. My mother knew every old wives' tale that ever was told, and I learned them all from her, including many superstitions. In spite of efforts to think scientifically, I think a little of the superstitions have stuck with me. I don't walk under ladders or purposefully hang out around black cats!

  28. I did not know black cats were a bad omen until I came to the US. As for Friday the 13th it was considered a lucky day back home and once I bought a lottery ticket on a Friday the 13th with a number ending in 13 and I won about $60, that was not much, but we are talking early 1960s.

  29. Life's too short to make such a big deal of 13!
