I'm now trying out the free Netflix trial streaming. Like before, we haven't found a lot of current movies on Netflix that we'd like to watch although we enjoyed Intouchables and Into the White.
Therefore instead of movies, we've started watching TV type shows. So far we've enjoyed/are enjoying Doc Martin, Sherlock, Inspector Lewis and last night, Foyle's War. (We really like Foyle's War.) As I look at the list I'm seeing that they're mostly... ummmm... all British TV shows. Aha, I've turned into an Anglophile.
Are you doing Netflix? Can you recommend some shows? Have you tried any other streaming site? Is it better than Netflix?

I am enjoying the Netflix streaming. I started it so I could watch "Orange Is the New Black" and then watched "House of Cards" and several different documentaries. You have already watched all of Doc Martin? And I haven't watched Foyle's War but have heard very good things about it. I just don't want to spend all my time sitting in front of the TV! :-)
ReplyDeleteActually we watched pretty much all of Doc Martin a while ago before we cancelled Netflix when they pretty much doubled their pricing by splitting the DVD rentals and streaming. As Art predicted, when we got onto Netflix, it robbed my blogging time.
Deletewe just recently cancelled our Netflix, we found we were only watching the British television dramas as well, so we went to our library and found a bounty of them , Heart beat, Midsomer murders, Inspector Linely, Inspector Lewis, the reason I like the British dramas like this list , not as much blood and yuk, its there maybe but they don't show it.There are more of this type of television, Inspector Frost, thats a good one, happy television viewing Kay,
ReplyDeleteThank you, Laurie. We'll have to look into those shows once we run out of Foyle's War. We may eventually have to just cancel the streaming too because it does rob me of my blogging time... just as Art predicted.
DeleteDuring the summer we mainly watch baseball games. Youngest Son is a Netflix streamer and always finds something to watch, although I think his standards are pretty low.

ReplyDeletewe rent from "redbox" and we like that. one dollar per movie, renting on the cheap.
we have rented perhaps 10 movies in the last few months and have not been doing to well. we have been recording some of the older movies on t.v. and have been enjoying those. we recently watched "somethings gotta give" & "sweet november". we had seen both but enjoyed them a second time!!
I confess we had to get my brother's help to connect the TV to the streaming. However once you're done, that's it.
DeleteI have netflix but I haven't been watching must instant as of late, but Daisy does a lot. Her current show is Charmed, but she's watched Grey's anatomy, Dawson's Creek, Private Practice and some other shows.
ReplyDeleteI just watch my blu-ray discs I get (which is a seperate charge) but that's usually takes up all the time I have to watch TV/movies.
Netflix is relatively new to the UK. We don't use it but our son does.We use LoveFilm.

DeleteI actually changed the channel while watching the new "Blacklist" due to it's gore, and went to a local "Hollywood at Home" to rent some DVDs.
ReplyDeleteVia Hulu, and TVDuck, I found "Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman" episodes, and tried a streaming subscription, but then the TV series wasn't retrievable. I cancelled within 10 minutes and ordered the entire series in DVDs via Amazon.
I've enjoyed my "Golden Girls" DVD set, for fun laughs.

I used to love Dr Quinn too. I haven't heard of Blacklist. I'm not at all sure how long we'll do the streaming. I can't watch TV, blog AND read the many books I have on my Kindle.
DeleteI'm enjoying the PBS series on Netflix, Call the Midwife. True story about 3 young girls who were midwives in London's East End in the 1950s. Very good! I don't have tv so I get Netflix for a few months a year, mostly in the winter. If you cancel for awhile they ask you to come back and give you another free month.
ReplyDeleteWe enjoy Netflix and have seen some great series. Our mutual favorite to date has been Ugly Betty. Terry and I diverge a lot in our tastes,so it's nice that we can stream from many different devices.
ReplyDeleteWe too have discovered Doc Martin. I don't think it is being made any more though. Sigh. We use Hulu to get our old-show fix. It's free. Terry's laptop has a really large screen (we don't have a fancy new TV) so it works quite well for us to sit on the couch, with the computer on the chow table, and watch our show. Usually one each evening is plenty.

ReplyDeleteI have heard of Netflix, but that's about all. Meanwhile, I have only the vaguest idea what streaming is. I have my favorite TV channels (Home & Garden, and Do-It-Yourself, neither of which Dick wants to watch) and he records movies onto our PVR for us to watch when we're both home at the same time. I haven't turned the TV on yet today (4:18) and am thinking of having a nap before Lindy starts demanding her supper at 6pm.

I do have Netflix but I am still in the DVD stage. I only watch one a week which is plenty for me.
ReplyDeleteOne British show I adore I get on PBS. It is an older series-- As Time Goes By with Judy Dench. It is a cute half hour comedy that makes me laugh out loud. She is a hoot. I have watched the entire series twice.

ReplyDeleteWe don't have Netflix - we can barely keep up with the programs that we DVR! When we occasionally want to watch something in particular, we get it on Redbox. I just found out today that "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" is on Netflix! (It's not available on Redbox.) If you haven't seen it, you might enjoy it - your mom might, too.

I've already seen Jiro Dreams of Sushi and am still incredulous that anybody would pay that much for rice and raw fish. I love sushi, but would never pay that much. We don't have DVR or cable so Netlix was going to be the solution to any entertainment needs.

My all time favorite is Foyle's War and I have watched every one of them and will probably be watching them again. I also enjoy Doc Martin and Inspector Lewis. I used to watch Inspector Morse. John Thaw always reminded me of my Dad. I have watched Sherlock for many years but also like the American version Elementary. I don't have Netflix but people keep telling me I should get it.

Did you see "Endeavor" on PBS? It is about Inspector Morse, but when he was a young man! That was very good too!
I watch so much British TV shows that sometimes when I watch an American show, I can't understand the accents. HA!
I even watch a British soap, EASTENDERS. Don't start watching it, you will never stop!!
Endeavor? No, I haven't seen that. I'll keep that in mind. We have a LOT of seasons to get through of Foyle's War.
DeleteNo Netflix or Redbox or Hulu. We are so behind the times here. We did watch all of West Wing and enjoyed it a lot. The rest of the TV stuff, we watch it on tv. If we want to see a movie, we go to a theater, If it is great, we buy a copy. Boy, are we behind things. Often I just read. LOL
ReplyDeleteNo Netflix here either. We can get movies from Amazon Prime downloaded to our smart TV. we have Comcast On Demand, and get movies there, as well as TV shows. If we miss a TV show, we can get it free On Demand. We also just adjusted or comcast service and picked up HBO while paying less per month. so we are set for movies, and TV as well.
ReplyDeleteFoyle's War was an all time favorite of mine. I too love the British television shows. I think it is because they use regular looking people for their actors and not Hollywood paper dolls.
