Our daughter, Tiffany and her husband had given us this rather pricey Lifeproof cellphone cover when we first took the leap to buying the iPhone. Our son-in-law's brother-in-law had shown him this super duper cover that would protect the phone from breakage, drowning, snow and dirt. They said it would prevent the iPhone from breaking up up to a drop of six feet. I think you can even drop it in the ocean. Now why would you be talking in the ocean anyway?
Despite the supposed indestructibility of this cover, it was no match for the Hawaiian air. Right there at the corner where I turn the phone off, the rubber began coming apart.
Art used Shoe Goo to fix it. It was rather unsightly with a big glop, but it held together for about six months.
While we were at Home Depot, we saw this Krazy Glue that's supposed to work on rubber. You know what? It worked quite well.
I just looked at my phone. Although it's clear in this photo, it's now turned a little whitish.
However, the mend feels pretty firm. Ah well, we'll see how long this lasts. This cover might be LifeProof, but it's not Hawaiian proof.
POSTSCRIPT: I just found the LifeProof packing box with its warranty in my closet. OK, so I'm a pack rat too. It was bought on December, 2011. This super duper case has a warranty period of 90 days and can be extended for 365 days if you registered. I can't remember if we registered or not, but it doesn't matter since it's over a year old. Isn't this pretty crappy if it's only warranted for a year?

hope it holds up for you,
ReplyDeleteWe don't have IPhones but have Androids. They are new and for The Hubby's birthday, last month, our oldest got him a thing called an Otterbox to protect the phone. The only thing is that he almost immediately got the phone wet and then then stepped on the corner of the thing and broke it. He's so hard on his phones. So new phone, new otterbox and we're good to go!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh... Then the Otter Box DIDN'T protect it, hunh?
DeleteWhat will keep the screen from shattering? My Kindle case does a pretty good job of protecting my Kindle Fire HD. I have dropped it a lot. I don't think it helps to waterproof however.
ReplyDeleteThere's a skin on it that protects the phone from scratches, etc.
DeleteI have my iPhone in what's called an Otter Box, which protects it from many things but nothing is really indestructible. I got one from Amazon for $17, while they cost three times that at Best Buy. :-)
ReplyDeleteAha! Looks like two votes for the Otter Box! The Lifeproof was about $79.00+.
DeleteLooks like you need a new cover soon Kay!
ReplyDeleteI just read there will be a cheaper iphone release coming soon!
ReplyDeleteThey gave me a "shoe" for my android. I don't like it; I prefer its lovely, shiny self. But when I think about taking the shoe off I can hear the salesman say "You'll be glad you have it when you drop the phone." Sigh. I drag the phone out of my pocket by putting my finger through the slot for the charger. It's been this way for more than a year. The slot hasn't ripped off and I haven't dropped the phone.
ReplyDeleteThe case may not be waterproof any more; don't take it in the ocean next time you go :-)
ReplyDeleteSeriously, the company may be interested to hear how well it DIDN'T hold up for you. Might not hurt to contact them.
Thanks, Kathy! I just wrote to them. We'll see what happens.
Deletecan't you trade it in for a new one? but why would you want too? lol...
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid not. The warranty is only good for a year. I just found that out. We got it on December, 2011.
DeleteThat case isn't anything proof any more. I bet it has a lifetime guarantee...you might check. :)
ReplyDeleteNope. No lifetime guarantee.
DeleteLiving in Hawaii must be like living near the beach in Florida. Nothing is safe from the salt air.
ReplyDeleteTerry got a "skin" for his I-pod about five years ago. It is still good, and he still uses the I-pod,believe it or not. We'll probably get a smart phone one of these times.
ReplyDeleteWhen I bought the first iPhone, I asked the delightful young salesman about a cover. "You don't need a cover," he said. "It's just a way to get people to spend more money." Almost every one I knew at that time with a smart phone had a cover, but I decided to see what happened without one. Terry now has the phone, 4 years later, still working fine, sans cover. I bought a new iPhone in March '12, again without a cover, and am doing just fine.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand I did drop my phone on the concrete floor once and it's still working so that's a good thing. I do have butterfingers at times.
DeleteI think the iPhones are pretty sturdy. Our grandkids use our phones and have occasionally dropped them. So far, so good.
DeleteIt's nice to make quick little fixes instead of buying something new.
ReplyDeleteI actually had to fix something just about an hour ago. My mailbox flap kept falling down all the time (the hardware keeping it on the stand wasn't holding up well either) so I got these little magnets on the inside of the flap and it won't be falling down anymore.
Now I don't have to worry about rain getting in or someone walking by who might see something they "like".
What if you took your phone to the Apple store and asked them if they have something that could fix it? I'm sure Steve Jobs would not like the sight of all the goop on his iphone.
ReplyDeleteL...w
It's not on the iPhone, but on the LifeProof cover. I just found the warranty which is only good for a year. So that's that.
DeleteAs long as it still protects, good job. Wonder if it is still ocean and toilet proof? Recently read about a fellow who's boat capsized and he was treading water for hours but his water proof phone was able to get him help.
ReplyDeleteAhhhh.... the toilet.... I never thought about that! What a terrible thought!
DeleteYes. Hawaii reminds us that everything changes!
ReplyDeleteAloha
Sometimes it pays to buy a new one. Dianne
ReplyDeletemost importantly, the phone can still be used..
ReplyDeleteI don't have an iPhone. I do like how you've repaired yours. Well done.
