We were stopped at an intersection recently, waiting for the light to change when suddenly we were jolted very hard from behind. I didn't know what it was at first. Art went out to check.
Our rear bumper had these two screw indentations and a horizontal line from the other car's license plate.
The woman driver came out of her car apologizing profusely. It seems a cockroach ran over her foot and she panicked. I felt sorry for her. Art said he'd just let it go since the damage was minor.
The next day we saw my brother and sister-in-law and told them what happened.
"Oh, wait until you see what happened to us," said my sister-in-law.
They had a huge dent in their rear bumper! Apparently a speeding motorcyclist ran into them and went flying over their car leaving a dent at the top also. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet and survived.
And you wonder why I'm afraid to drive.

I have been very reluctant to get behind the wheel of my own car ever since my accident, but I do it anyway. Only a few more weeks before it will be repaired, but my damage is WAY worse than these. But that motorcyclist is lucky to have survived! I hope he learned his lessons and won't speed any more. Glad your damage is not any worse from that license plate. :-)
ReplyDeleteIncredible and so fortunate the motorcyclist survived!! I don't drive at all either, not even to our neighborhood grocery store. I used to drive standard shift into town alone or with our kids sitting behind but can't imagine how I managed to do that. I was always not a good driver, and count my blessings that I didn't cause an accident!

You really need to check with your insurance company, and I hope you got the other driver's insurance information. As particular as you and Art are about your possessions, I know you will want to get this damage repaired, and it will cost a lot of money. There is likely damage underneath that you cannot see. That has happened twice now to my Subaru bumper, once only costing $700 and the second time costing $2300. If left unattended, rust will set in and cause even more damage.
ReplyDeleteNo, we're not going to get it fixed. Ever since someone left a large scratch over our left back wheel, Art has just given up. He doesn't feel he can keep the car pristine in Hawaii. Too many bad drivers.
DeleteMe too, but we have to drive to accomplish anything at all. Yes, I hope you got the lady's insurance card. It is a simple fix, but they will replace the bumper cover with a remanufactured bumper cover. (Says the car guy I live with.) Just watch out for motor cycles.

ReplyDeleteThe other driver is very fortunate that you both are such nice people. Our son was served a lawsuit that resulted in 30K bodily injury for a "collision" that didn't resuilt in any damage to the bumper. The victim claimed TMJ and loss of love that resulted in a divorce. She said our son swore profanity and intimidated her. I don't know how or why the case ended where she got what she got. Still today when I google our son's name that case pops up on the internet and that was almost 20 years ago.

And our son was just a student at UH at that time. He said she was very nice, and all that, but look at the damage she caused. Our son said the insurance company wanted to appeal the decision but lost. I don't understand how she could have won when there was absolutely no damage to the car. Sorry for taking up space on your blog lately with my irrelevant rant and raves.

Good grief! This is horrible! Your poor son. The accident which had no damage to her car caused the divorce? That's crazy! This is all so wrong. Then again I've heard of cases like this that make no sense. Our friend's son was going across an intersection on a green light and was broadsided by someone who sped through the red light. In court, the other side's insurance lawyer said our friend's son should have looked more carefully before entering the intersection so it was also his fault. And they won also. It was incredulous!

DeleteThe cyclist was very fortunate. A roach would have freaked me, too. I once saved us from a fatal accident by reaching over and picking a spider off my sister's leg. She was driving and had she noticed there would have been a fatal accident.

ReplyDeleteWe do not spend enough time contemplating the huge piece of machinery that is under our control on the road. It is frightening when you stop and think of the damage you can do with that power in your hands.
ReplyDeleteOne more reason I moved to Arkansas, no roaches. Eek. So glad there was no more damage than the dimples but dkzody has a point about rust. That cyclist was quite fortunate. Rear end accidents are so tough for there is nothing you can do to prevent them. Hey, as long as you have a willing chauffeur, use him.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness it wasn't more serious. I have been rear-ended twice in the last 10 months, both at a stop light. I've been blaming it on cell phones but I don't know for sure.
