Art was attempting to clean out our gutters when he noticed some nesting debris on our rafters. He reached up to clean out the twigs and leaves and nearly fell off the ladder when a dove startled him as it suddenly flew up. Thinking the nest was now empty he again reached up to remove some of the twigs when a baby bird fluttered out and onto the ground.
Art located the fledgling that looked unhurt. He put on some gloves and gently put the bird back in the nest.
A week later, Art figured the fledgling would have flown off so he decided to clean out the nesting material.
Nope. There was the fledgling sitting on the air conditioning channel. As Art watched, the bird flew off onto our neighbor's roof. I guess it decided our house was not the easiest place to make a home.

ReplyDeleteGlad Art was not so startled he fell off the ladder -- 'Man Injured by Baby Bird' would not have been a good headline for the local paper.
Doves are extremely brave and seem to build nests in the most dangerous places and sometimes barely a few feet off the ground.
ReplyDeleteSo glad Art and the cutie bird survived the invasion. I had a similar thing happen once and it really is startling--for both human and bird.

ReplyDeleteSometimes birds have to be very persistent to complete nesting.
ReplyDeleteWe had three birds nesting around our house this past summer -- on the deck, in the hedge and the tree. They're nice to have around, but you do have to be careful of them ... so tell Art to be careful!

ReplyDeleteWhew! Glad Art is safe. Curious: what is an air conditioner channel? I see that it looks like horizontal closed guttering, but is it channeling air or contain coils? Mainland houses have ductwork inside the walls to vent/registers. MORE birds could come hang out on the channel! Is it cool for their feet? Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteA lot of older homes in Hawaii like ours have single wall construction so those conduits have to be on the outside.

ReplyDeleteI really don't like when birds nest on our eaves, etc. because bird mites can enter the house and make clothes, beds, etc. itchy. Doves do seem to be the main problem and build their nests in the most precarious places. Somehow they survive and manage to poop and make a mess wherever they can.
