OK, I admit that I find it fun to look out my window on New Year's Eve to watch the fireworks going off all over the island. But they are ILLEGAL... for good reason.
They worry me. Someone's house burned down from illegal aerial fireworks. I've also seen those luminaries that are really dangerous. They have a little flame in it that heats the air which causes the paper bag to float in the sky. I saw over a dozen of those go floating into the sky over residential homes in our area. There's also some really obnoxious people who set off concussion bombs which really scare me. It makes the house shake and car alarms go off. I really feel for the poor pets on the island.
My friend, Ron forwarded this photo to me recently. I also saw it on the local nightly news.

The police don't really do anything about it. On the other hand they've really been ticketing people who text while driving ($295!!!), not coming to a complete stop at an intersection, speeding, etc.
Well... perhaps in the grand scheme of things, I'm glad the police are concentrating on our traffic problem in Hawaii. I just wish they'd also put a damper on some of those dangerous and aggravating fireworks too.

I suspect the police's problem is actually catching someone in the act of setting off fireworks.
ReplyDeleteWe had illegal fireworks around here, too, on New Years Eve. I think it must be hard to find the perpetrator when they are gone by the time the police arrive. I think education is the answer to illegal fireworks. You're doing your part, Kay. :-)

ReplyDeleteI hate fire works, 11 years we lived on the ninth floor and fireworks were set off just out front of us on the shore line, the smell from the pollution was hideous ,, terrible for our environment, clouds of black soot floated in the air for hours after doing goodness knows what damage to people and animals, polluting the water and land, I think they should be banned, nature gives us enough beauty to see,

ReplyDeleteFireworks have been such a long time tradition in Hawaii. I am guessing the law will look the other way until some major block or hotel burns to the ground.

ReplyDeleteThis seems to happen more and more lately. They are really expensive here and our neighbor across the water shot them off for hours on New Years Eve, $2500 worth! They used to only happen on the Fourth of July and were provided by the city but now everyone has them.

ReplyDeleteThat is quite a show. I would feel more comfortable if professionals handled them. I always wondered about those luminaries. Surely they come down eventually. It is like when people fire guns in the air to celebrate. The bullets will return to earth eventually. Wouldn't want to be under one.
ReplyDeleteAs a matter of fact, when my parents lived in another town someone did shoot off a gun at New Year. My parents couldn't figure out why there was a round hole in their roof and ceiling. My brother works for the police department and said someone had to have shot a bullet into the air which had to come down somewhere. I'm glad they moved.
DeleteThe fireworks are legal here but I think they are limited in what is for sale. In other words they are not allowed to sell the big bombs.
ReplyDeleteThe prob other than I have one dog totally traumatized by fireworks is that the illegal ones started going off on Halloween onwards. They're smart too, they only play one burst at a time, so no time to call police to catch 'em in the act. Then an hour later they shoot off one again. On the Eve as annoying as it is, I can tranq'd my dog and he's sorta out of it. But what can you do when it's individually set off. Even when driving someone plays and my dog tries to hide by my feet which makes for a dangerous drive, trying to grab my dog while I steer. Thank goodness most of it stopped right after NY, but still now an occasional one goes off weekly. Dolts.

I'm with you on all the illegal fireworks! Where we used to live, life would be miserable on the days leading up to the 4th of July, and the few days after, because of all the fireworks being set off around us. Thankfully, that is not a problem where we live now. The police are on it I think because of fire danger.
ReplyDeleteFireworks are illegal in most locations around here, but the Indian Reservations sell them, and folks set them off, of course.
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about fireworks since I grew up with them and used to enjoy the boom and thrill of roman candles, sparklers, and those 10,000 cracker rolls with the center boom boom heralding the new year. I like them for what they remind me of and how pretty they are, but I dislike them for how they are a nuisance and a waste of money. Thankfully our old dog is now quite deaf and this year she did fine without tranquilizers. Last year, she kept freaking out because I think the tranquilizer made her feel too strange and less able to cope with the firework blasts.
ReplyDeleteFor me, it wouldn't be the same without fireworks at new years, but as I get older, I need tradtional celebrations less and less, so I'll be okay with or without them.
Fireworks and drones...more coming all the time. Life is a challenge to stay safe and especially on the roads!
