2015 ended with another dent to our holiday cheer... literally.
We were out shopping and looking for a parking space. Someone in front of us was reversing out of his space so I told Art to stop and let him out. While we waited, I noticed the car on the right of us was also reversing out. Art honked his horn frantically to signal him that we were right behind. Art couldn't back up because someone was also behind us.
So there we were sandwiched between two cars with a third backing up slowly toward us. I thought he would stop. I considered jumping out of our car to stop him, but didn't think I could do it fast enough. Besides, I thought he would stop with all the honking. Everybody else in the parking lot heard our honking.
Nope, the car backed right into us. We all got out to look at the damage. The poor fellow who hit us was terribly shaken and showed us his driver's license as well as his insurance card.
Art and I were unhappy about our car and the accident, but we felt even worse that we'd unfortunately ruined that poor fellow's holiday by being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Our car is in the shop to be fixed now and the fellow is paying for it all.
In all the time we were in Illinois nobody has ever hit us when Art was driving. (Me? That's another story.) However, since we've been in Hawaii these past 8 years we've been hit three times, all more or less minor, but disfiguring to our poor car.
Art wondered for a while if we should be trading in our car for a newer model. We decided against it so we wouldn't feel bad when we got the next scrape, bang, bump or dent.
Sigh...

That's nothing compared to the damage to my car (and the other) when I failed to yield when leaving a parking lot. My insurance paid and fortunately for me, they didn't raise my rates. Yet. :-)
ReplyDeleteCar accidents and repairs, even for a little dent, is frustrating. Thankfully that was all the damage...just the car and not to you.
ReplyDeleteI have the same car. I am a body shop's best friend...always dinging it on high curbs or backing into something. Fortunately no other cars involved (knock wood).
ReplyDeletegood move to not buy a new car...lol! glad no one was hurt!
ReplyDeleteOh, yes!! I am glad no one was hurt, but it still does mess with your day, that's for sure!! Do take care and have a great new week, Kay!!
ReplyDeleteThankfully you were not injured. I wonder if people in Hawaii are older demographically and do not hear or look around. How can you back into a car with honking going on everywhere!!??
ReplyDeleteThat would certainly put a dent in your holiday! I'm so sorry this happened. Such things cause such a trial for all concerned. Did the guy say why he didn't stop with all the honking? I think people drive so distracted these days.
ReplyDeleteHe said he heard the honking but didn't think it was about him.
Deleteglad no one was hurt. my husband is a horrible driver and we have scratches and dents all over our car.
ReplyDeleteglad it is a minor accident Kay, upsetting nonetheless.
ReplyDeleteUgh, what a bummer, for you and the person that hit you. People's minds are extremely distracted during the hurry-scurry of the holiday season, it's a relief when January 2 comes around so that there is more focus (especially when driving). I plead guilty, because I'm always thinking about whether I've forgotten anything for making this dish or that dish, or I have to be here at this time and there at this time. Glad no one got hurt.
ReplyDeleteI do notice that most people in Hawaii try to back into parking spaces. I haven't seen that as much in Chicago. I can see where it's a good practice although it often keeps everybody waiting while someone tries to back in slowly.
DeleteAt my work there was a big red truck that hit a car in the parking lot belonging to a co-worker. They just drove off without leaving even a note.
ReplyDeleteI don't like to park near a lot of cars for that reason
Please remember it is just a car not your life...we get hit in a public library by a woman who lied to the insurance we had, she ended getting her license denied and huge increase for her parents who own the car and to boot our insurance is the same company and we did not get an increase..the people who live here use cars with NO INSURANCE whatsoever and most are not licensed, so we proceed with great caution, as for me I walk, bike and take public transportation for practically free it takes a long time but oh well I am safe and if the bus hits a car it is usually the cars fault, you cannot replace your life, a car so what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteUgh - I really hate parking lots. Too many near accidents or real accidents and a lot of road rage. Watching the car come towards you must have been like a slow motion nightmare in high speed.
ReplyDeleteNew cars now have back up cameras and some have driver assist for lane changing. I need all that plus one that can smack idiot drivers or help the clueless ones. Poor old fellow (I assume he was an old fellow) needs to stop driving. We need more services to drive old people around other then Uber, taxis or Handivans.
You're right. It was an older person which is why Art felt even worse for him.
DeleteOuch!! So glad no one was hurt but your car seems to have a bullseye on it.
ReplyDeleteBacking up is always treacherous. I find it especially nerve wracking when I'm parked next to a bigger vehicle so I can't see who is coming. Back up camera helps since it has the fish eye. I read some where that in one Asian country, people are taught to back into their parking spaces so they can pull out of them rather then back out of them. Makes sense.
ReplyDeleteLittle dings like that really shake you up. I've had two in the last year. I onlt had one in my life before!
ReplyDeleteI learned that a woman driver passed out and rear ended my truck, fire hydrant and street light, that if that happens it's best it's an older person who has full coverage. She had GEICO and their adjuster was excellent and they have GEICO designated body repair shops and offices in them. So it's a one stop deal...and I also got a free rental car from Enterprise less than a mile away. My truck had prior major dents, scrapes and dings so afterwards it looked brand new. Her bachi? She had bought the new Toyota (2015) the week before. Luckily she did cuz ALL the airbags deployed that probably saved her life..could not see inside the truck with all those balloons.
ReplyDeleteThe fellow who hit us had Allstate, but didn't want to claim it. I think he was worried about his premiums going up.
DeleteSorry it happened but thankfully no one was hurt and it could have been worse. I've come so close to being hit in similar situations and seen many near misses, it's surprising most do hear the horn and get stopped.
ReplyDeleteI hate backing out of parking places. People walking just walk right into your space and can get hit, and other cars just zip by. I take forever to back out to be ac careful as possible.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry this happened, but glad no one was hurt and your car is being taken care of!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about your accident Kay. Parking lots can be scary. I always try to find a spot where I can pull through but you can't always do that. I once saw two ladies who reversed out of their spots into each other. They got into an almighty row. The security guard tried to calm them while staying clear. I didn't see the actual accident but heard the crunch. I didn't stick around to see the outcome. There were enough people who did.
ReplyDeletethats too bad,, but I can see how it happens,,
