Art and I just saw Revenant. It was beautifully filmed, but violent and frankly unbelievable. I don't want to leak a spoiler but I think everybody knows it's a story loosely based on the life of Hugh Glass who was mauled by a bear and left for dead by his companions.
I looked up the word Revenant in the Merriam-Webster dictionary and it says it means "one who returns after death or a long absence". That's exactly what Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass does in order to get vengeance against the man who left him for dead. Leonardo was amazing! I read one review that said he deserves the purple heart for acting. Seriously!
However, I found that although the movie does give lip service to retribution not being able to return one to the happy state they were in before evil was done to them, it was more about violence, seeking revenge and survival.
When I looked online to find out about the real Hugh Glass I learned that another movie about him starring Richard Harris had been made in 1971 called Man in the Wilderness.

I didn't see this movie, but Wikipedia's synopsis says:
Then again, perhaps movie goers would rather see a more gut wrenching movie like Revenant.
I sure hope Leonardo gets an oscar for the agony and pains he must have suffered during filming.

"However, when he finally confronts his fellow trappers and Captain Henry, he chooses not to seek revenge, but instead to focus on returning to his infant son."I prefer the gentler idea of forgiveness to violent retribution.

I read he gave a great performance but not sure I want to go see it. I do remember the Richard Harris movie.
ReplyDeleteI saw enough of the previews to know that I don't want to see it.
ReplyDeleteMy sister went to see it and said I should go, so I will. But I'm not looking forward to it. It sounds like a brutal movie.
ReplyDeletePhotobucket is an online photohost. Instead of posting directly to blogger or any other site, I use Snapfish and now Photobucket to hold my photos.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am no longer into agony. I'm letting other's see that movie.
I always like your reviews Kay I would rather see the first movie.
ReplyDeleteI've not seen the movie so can't comment on it. With so much retribution in our world today I wonder about the wisdom of a movie that reinforces it. Don't see a lot about forgiveness these days.
ReplyDeleteI have no plans to see that movie because I am too disturbed by images of violence. I have not seen the older movie, but it certainly sounds more redemptive and that is certainly what the world needs more of right now.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely with your blog today. And I'm a Leo fan, hoping for him to get the Oscar. No one has ever done a greater single performance. Amazing, but I was freezing in the theater from watching all the cold scenes.
ReplyDeleteI heard he was nominated for an oscar for the role. Maybe it will be the one that gets him his first oscar
ReplyDeleteI posted on FB that the movie was about blood in the snow...bear blood, buffalo blood, man's blood, horse blood, etc.
ReplyDeletei don't think i can see this. i have enough trouble with the daily news.
ReplyDeleteI don't have the stomach for that kind of "entertainment." The last movie I went to was The Martian. Same plot but without the carnage.
ReplyDeleteI think you have convinced me not to see the movie. I really don't need to watch all that violence and retribution. It is a sad commentary on our culture that we wouldn't flock to see movie with a kinder and gentler ending. Or maybe we would.
ReplyDeleteThink I too am going to pass. I am such a nonviolent person that I am sure it would upset me.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen this movie and probably won't. I don't like any violence. the skeptic in me says that any trapper kind of movie is highly unrealistic. The mountain man thing allows for lots of violence.
ReplyDeleteI liked him in Titanic. I am surprised that he hasn't gotten an Oscar yet. I will also pass on seeing this. I prefer feel good movies or flights of fancy. Depressing movies tend to haunt me for days.
ReplyDeleteThough the way you speak of it makes the movie looks engaging, I'm not a movie goer and, believe it or not, I've never heard of Hugh Glass. However, you made his story sound so interesting that I researched the internet and read of his incredible story of survival. So thanks for broadening my knowledge base.
ReplyDeleteI have no interest in seeing violent films there is enough of that on the news every night...
ReplyDeleteI like to be entertained when I go to a movie. That is not entertainment to me. I agree with Lyn...there is enough violence in today's world. We don't need to subject ourselves to even more and call it "entertainment". I often wonder how much violence this type of movie and many TV shows inspire in a person who is not too stable anyhow.
ReplyDeleteWe keep wondering if Hollywood has given up on producing light comedies or feel-good romance films. Our theater attendance has dropped almost to zero. Let's hope Leo, a truly gifted actor, will get opportunities to appear in something we find appealing.
ReplyDeleteI did the same thing you did after watching the movie and learned of an earlier film. They changed his name in that one to Bass instead of Glass. Also had to look up the meaning of Revenant. I loved the movie. DiCaprio was wonderful and the scenery was fantastic. They started filming in Canada and had to change to Argentina to complete in order to have the right snow and background mix. As far as bloody, there is never enough violence for me. Oops now you know:-)
ReplyDeleteYou are too funny! My mom actually occasionally watches some pretty violent stuff and says it doesn't bother her because she knows it's all fake. I get too involved in the plot and action.
Deletehmmmm....
ReplyDeleteI have no desire to see that. I watch movies based on my instinct, sounds weird i know but it is what it is. I am simply never swayed by critics and the like. If when i preview it speaks to me and sparks that interest i'd see it, if not I do not.
have a great week.
We plan to see it, but I'm not especially looking forward to it. It's beautiful but brutal from what I have heard.
ReplyDeleteI'll be sure to miss this movie (just like I miss all the others). Last night I got drawn into a rerun on TV of the 1990 version of "Lord of the Flies," and even that was too much for me.
