We started our house renovation in 2006 in preparation for our move to Hawaii in 2008. After 10 years, the end is in sight. Right now we're working on the baseboards in my office.
Art has been cutting and nailing in the baseboards and my job later will be to caulk the spaces, cover and sand the nail holes with wood filler and then paint it.
It's tiring for us. I think it was easier to handle all this 10 years ago, but my joints are creaking more now.
Anyway... I'm hoping this will be the year that we actually finish this project.
We had to move all the furniture away from the walls so we could work on the baseboards.
What I found behind the computer was a HORRIBLE tangle of cords going every which way. I used to have the worst time trying to figure out which cord belonged to the scanner or speaker or printer or computer or monitor or web cam, etc.
I wish I took a photo of the BEFORE so you could appreciate the difference.
This is the AFTER.
It might still look like a tangle but it really is more organized now.
I separated, coiled and secured the long cords. I then labeled them carefully so I'd know what they are when we move the computer table back to the wall.
OK... Now back to baseboards. We have 11 months to finish them which is our goal. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I need to do something like that. My cords are a mess too...especially since I have three computers and two printers. My oldest is a 2006 laptop with it's own printer. I use it for storage and also Quicken. It's also the only computer that recognizes my old scanner. The other newer laptop was given to me by my daughter-in- law. She got a nice tablet and gave me her laptop. Then when my old desktop died, my son brought me a new one. He took the old one and reformatted the hard drive and sent it to my niece.

ReplyDeleteIn order to cut down on wear and tear on your knees you could paint the trim before installation. Then you could caulk and touch up with less time on your knees.

You're absolutely right. Art does give each of the boards two coats of paint before nailing them in. However, I have to fill in the nail holes, caulk and paint over the areas that I filled, sanded and caulked. You're absolutely right that it would be an even bigger job if he didn't already preprint it.
DeleteI'm positive baseboards are the last project home owners end up finishing,, such finicky work, and not in the eyes view all the time easy to put off,
ReplyDeletecord tangles are a thorn in my side, honestly I complain about this all the time,, I did what you did and it did help but I also saw a product on tv that corals the cords in a tube that was interesting, never found it though,, its so hard to vacoom with cords laying all about,,it drives me crazy!
This must have been a labour of love, well done...almost done.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed at the energy you and Art have expended. No more DYI for david and me and I fear our handyman is reaching the end of his repair days also. He broke our sliding glass door just before the big storm.

ReplyDeleteI'm more than ready for all these devices to go totally cordless. Someday we'll look back on all these cords and think how antiquated they were.
ReplyDeleteyou are so ambitious, I finally moved to a wireless mouse that helps but still have a wired in keyboard. Also bought a new wireless printer-less cords helps.

ReplyDeleteNever ending...I hate to tell you that. G did a touch up on the paint in the upstairs bath and kitchen. The paint turned out to be spoiled, and now it all has to be chemically removed. It would be funny if he wasn't procrastinating so much. After that.....

PS: G got a long length of that black plastic corrugated cord cover. It helps keep the dust off the cords.

You'd probably have a lot of heart palpitations if you came into my home (full of cats, fur and kitty litter that I try to vacuum up several times a day, but it's a never-ending grind -- still, I love my naughty kitties). Alright, I'd be too ashamed to invite you in.

Yikes! At least it will all be hidden again once the baseboards are done. My TV area is a mess because of dvd players, mini mac, speakers, etc. attached to each other. I tried to replace with shorter cords to minimize all the excess cord. You did a great job coiling and labeling.

Wood baseboards are pretty classy. Yes it gets harder and harder to get down and work and harder than ever to get up.

ReplyDeleteMarking the cords in some way is the way togo - and to keep your knees happy use one of those green kneeling mats found in the gardening dept. I leave the cords to The Golfer - the skirting board (base board to you) also :)

ReplyDeleteHahaha. My knees don't work anymore so no baseboards. I would have to be in charge of waist-high and up projects. Glad you're able to do the work. Keep it up and you'll be through before you know it.
