We saw an ad in the paper for the Simply Organized store in Ewa which is quite a distance away.
We were looking for a particular sized container for our rice to prevent bugs from having a food source.
Friends told me that things at this store was quite pricey, but I thought 75% off would bring it down to my level of spending.
Mom said she hadn't been to Ewa in 15 years so we thought we'd just make an outing of it. We took her out to lunch and then drove to the west side of the island. I was pretty excited imagining what we might be able to find to organize our house. I love to organize.
Ummmmm... Could the store be this cleaned out in just one day? Some other customers who walked in at the same time as us were also shocked at seeing the empty shelves.
What could we do? We laughed and stopped at Costco on the way home.
We all had a frozen vanilla/chocolate yogurt swirl and did a little shopping.
Mom was surprised at how big the dessert was, but she had absolutely no trouble finishing it and was all smiles.
Art looked up the calories on the swirl and said it was 300 calories. He said we could make in up by walking 4 miles.
Since mom is under 100 pounds, I think she's OK.
Me? Never mind.

You had a good day though. I don't think those 100 cals will do her any harm.
ReplyDeleteThat was truly strange about the store. Could it have been one of those places where people were lined up to get inside when it opened? And my goodness those ARE big desserts. :-)
ReplyDeleteCostco does not do small in anything by the looks. Bet it was tasty. The picture of your mom flooded me with memories of my own mom. She had dementia in the end but music and ice cream would bring out such a look of pure joy that would melt my heart.
ReplyDeleteSo did you walk the 4 miles? I have been trying to run 4 every other day on the elliptical, and it is hard to make that a habit. I love stores that have organization stuff as well. Getting my photo albums organized.
ReplyDeleteYou can count your day's shopping as a mile or two!
ReplyDeletewell you deserved the ice cream after that disappointment...lol!
ReplyDeleteThey had to have moved things to another store. Yes on the swirls. Target has some good containers that you might use for your rice. :)
ReplyDeleteI've learned that once 75% hits, that everything good has already been long gone. It's so sad to see an empty store even if they just move to another place down the road
ReplyDeleteWell, that was a win , win, win situation. No shopping, a good outing and a great treat!
ReplyDeletethe perfect treat!
ReplyDeleteThat looked like a "going out of business" event.
ReplyDeleteour mum is typical older lady!
ReplyDeletei don't think i have ever eaten that much ice cream in my whole life put together! way to go!
ReplyDeleteYour Mom's smile is so pretty. It would just make one keep buying her things just to keep it there.
ReplyDeleteThat was shocking - the emptiness of the store in one day! Since City Mill owns the Simply Organized stores, I go there because their home section is pretty good and slightly less in price, though a Simply Organized employee told me that they don't carry the same things. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteI use empty plastic bottles from nori package sheets (Costco used to have those rather big bottles with the clear plastic body and red plastic screw on lids) for my rice storage. It may take a few bottles to empty the rice bag, but nowadays I get the 15 lb short grain rice and fill up one bottle, seal the bag and put it aside to refill. My rice measuring cut goes into the plastic bottle for easy measuring.
They are easy to see and move around. And $free 99, as my girlfriend likes to say.
Edit: rice measuring CUP, solly.
DeleteThat's a REALLY good idea! I just looked in my closet and found an old arare container we got from my aunt. Totally forgot about it! Perfect! Thanks a bunch! I'm going to try it out.
DeleteWhat a disappointment to find the store wiped out. On the other hand, you made a great day of it. I'm not a fan of the Costco ice cream, but my husband it. It give me a stomach ache. I'm glad you all enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a going-out-of-business sale.
ReplyDeleteDo you have Container Store over there. That;s a place I could go nuts in.
We tried so many different places but couldn't find anything that would work well. They were just closing that store but there's another one open on the other side of the island. I have a feeling that they moved a lot of the stuff over there. My question is why have such a huge advertising flyer with nothing much to sell.
DeleteThose kinds of things always annoy me. They should have waited until the sale was over to move the merchandise.
ReplyDeleteI have already put in my 4 miles so I'm going to the freezer for an ice cream sandwich. Thank your mama for the good idea.
ReplyDeleteWe had problems with bugs in our rice until we bought this from Amazon. Since their prices constantly changes I tracked the price for awhile om Camelcamelcamel.com. When it dropped to $17 I finally bought one. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007RBB54A?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
ReplyDeleteHi again! I was so happy to see your comments again. I did see that container and thought it was neat, but it was too big for our space. I did find something after Honolulu Aunty mentioned the nori container.
DeleteI'm surprised they weren't selling the empty shelves.
ReplyDeleteGlad you could laugh it off and sweeten the day with a swirl.
Wow, that store looked pretty cleaned out!! Atleast you had the swirl, which looked yummy by the way!!
ReplyDeleteI use glass jars! Even with -25 C. (-13 F.) today, we need to keep out the bugs!!!
